SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2009 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 68 565 Camaro 0.262 8.554 158.39
RU Dan Saitz, Fenton, MO 87 358 Mustang 0.231 9.400 146.37

Tim “Moose” Mallicoat not only scored an incredible twelfth consecutive victory but secured a record third straight season point championship in the Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Mallicoat, whose M&M Automotive/Dale Huff Motorsports “Hellraiser” 1968 Camaro became the first two-time champion in series history with point titles in 2007 and 2008, defeated the challenges of several new entries in SCSS competition and is now only one event win away from tying his remarkable streak of thirteen consecutive event victories earned between April 17th and August 21st, 2007.

Although the temperature never exceeded 76 degrees, conditions were actually no better than the 80-degree September 15th event. Extremely high humidity, (84% during the final rounds), kept the corrected elevation above 1600 feet until the very end of the race when it plunged to 1114 feet due to rising barometric pressure and 68-degree ambient air. Regardless, the traction was plentiful and the nineteenth SCSS program of the season included a huge number of career-best runs and a surprising number of new qualifiers. In fact, half the ]Super Sixteen qualifiers made the show for the first time ever!

With only five events remaining on the 2009 SCSS schedule, Mallicoat entered the September 22nd event needing to outlast his closest rival, Curtis Paulfrey at the helm of the yellow 502-inch naturally-aspirated Winner’s Circle Tire and Auto ‘68 Camaro, to wrap up the season championship. Mallicoat made his customary single qualifying attempt and produced a solid 8.64-second blast at 155.88 miles per hour to lead the field. Paulfrey needed to qualify within the top four positions to keep up with the “Moose”, but an amazingly consistent string of 10.09/134.32, 10.10/133.98 and 10.10/134.16 runs left Brighton, Illinois, campaigner in the sixth spot at the end of qualifying. At that point, Mallicoat needed only one elimination round win to clinch the season title on the basis of points earned.

The rest of the qualified field, however, produced some amazing performances. Behind Mallicoat were three drivers who qualified among the top four for the first time ever. Of those, the attention of most fans was directed squarely at the magnificent new 1968 Dodge Charger of St. Louisan Bo Peebles. The show-quality MoPar was created with help from Andy McCoy Race Cars and featured an all-aluminum 500 cubic-inch engine assembled by AMT Racing Engines. The big-inch wedge utilized twin 78mm turbochargers installed and tuned by midwestern turbo wizard Dan Saitz at Hyperformance Motorsports and the body was finished in a phenomenal blue paint sprayed by John’s Auto Body and Paint. The Charger’s very first qualifying effort shattered the existing SCSS elapsed time record for Chrysler-powered entries with a tremendous 9.28/144.57 to qualify second! In late timed trials after the conclusion of qualifying, Pebbles returned to clock a 9.20 at a whopping 155.94 mph!

Chris Esten’s unique blue 1975 Trans Am used 505 inches of Chevy power to clock a career-best 9.38/145.03 for third in the field and fourth was taken by Dan Saitz himself at the wheel of his own turbocharged 358-inch ‘87 Mustang. Known nationally for his supercharged and turbocharged Pro Modified entries, Saitz’s unusual 351 Windsor-powered rolling testbed for his Hyperformance Motorsports emporium hit a best of 9.41/144.36 after an initial 9.54/143.11 pass.

When the qualifiers were called to report in front of the main grandstands for eliminations, Esten discovered problems and declined to compete. First alternate Ray Arthur was driving his 355-inch “S-10 Revenge” pickup and, in a surprise move, elected to race in both the SCSS eliminations and the Super Truck Showdown final round. Inserted into Esten’s place, Arthur would be forced to battle Mallicoat while Saitz and Bo Peebles would square of in the other semi-final race. Said Saitz before the match with the wild new Dodge, “Bo is probably going to beat me but, since he’s one of my customers, Team Hyperformance can’t really lose, can it?”.

As if he needed to remind SCSS competitors of his Camaro’s consistency, the “Moose” put a holeshot of fifteen hundredths of a second on Arthur’s S-10 and drove away to his second consecutive 8.647-second run, this time at a slightly faster 157.06 miles per hour. However, the GIR track crew found oil on the starting line in Mallicoat’s lane and closer inspection revealed even more oil in the shutdown area. Upon his return in front of the grandstands, Mallicoat discovered a damaged valve cover gasket and proceeded to install a replacement. Once the oil was cleaned up, Saitz and Peebles staged an all-turbo Ford versus Dodge battle which found the Charger pilot sitting at the starting line when the lights turned green. In an attempt to build the MoPar to proper launch boost, Peebles was a full half-second later to leave the line than Saitz. The Ford clocked a 9.43/143.91 against the Charger’s 9.39/153.58 while actually arriving to the finish line over four tenths of a second, (103.35 feet!), ahead of the Dodge!

With the oil leak repaired, Mallicoat was ready for the challenge of Saitz’s Ford in the final round. Although the single turbo’d Mustang again gained a slight holeshot, it fell behind before the Christmas Tree when “Moose” clocked an ungodly 1.247-second sixty-feet elapsed time, the second-quickest “sixty” on D.O.T. tires in SCSS history! The naturally-aspirated 565-inch black Camaro didn’t stop there; a 5.46/127.31 eighth-mile was followed by the second-quickest run ever for the Collinsville, Illinois, veteran; an exceptional 8.55 at 158.39 mph handled Saitz’s best-ever 9.40/146.37.

During the presentation of his record fortieth winner’s trophy in front of the main grandstands, Mallicoat was questioned about a new addition to his ”Hellraiser“ Chevy prior to eliminations; the car appeared for competition with “For Sale” written in shoe polish on the rear roof pillars. “We’ve been running this car and my old blue ’67 Camaro with my son, Tim Junior, driving for the past few months and, to tell you the truth, it’s getting expensive. Originally, we planned to have both of us race next year but I’m actually thinking about just being the crewchief for Tim in the blue car in 2010. I’m not really sure what we’ll do but the car is for sale if the offer is right. Tim already has his NHRA Competition license and he’s doing well in the Super Truck class. He’s really itching to drive a faster car so we’ll see what the future holds”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS:“Moose“ Mallicoat may have wrapped up his third straight season championship but second place is still up for grabs between Curtis Paulfrey and Ray Arthur. Greg Boschert is safe in fourth place but the fifth and eighth spots are toss-ups, as well…Speaking of Greg “Hook-N-Ladder” Boschert, it was overlooked in the September 15th results that his white ’66 Mustang coupe was the only Ford qualifier last week, a first in the one hundred twenty completed SCSS events. He had a little company this week but not much; only Dan Saitz and Corey Stephens made the Super Sixteen field in FoMoCo products. By the way, Boschert clicked off a near career-best 10.75 at 127.91 mph…Bo Peebles actually returned for another pass during late timed trials after his semi-final loss and his incredible blue Dodge Charger put down a 9.21/153.75. The amazing new machine never had a “sixty” better than 1.68 seconds the entire event. Bo became the fifty-fourth member of the 9-Second Club, the thirty-sixth member of the 140 MPH Club and the twenty-third to join the 150 MPH Club…Chris Esten and Dan Saitz also became members of the 9-Second and 140 MPH Clubs…Dennis Hooker pushed his white 400-inch ’91 Camaro RS to a best-ever 10.79/125.15 to qualify for the first time and join the 10-Second and 120 MPH Clubs…John Cadenhead, the September 15th runner-up whose wild 515-inch ‘82 Malibu wagon became an instant crowd favorite, had a rough night. His first qualifying attempt was aborted when the ’Bu went to the moon in a huge wheelstand. A late timed trial resulted in numerous powerstands, (all the way to the four hundred-feet mark!), and an on-and-off-the-throttle 10.50/140.44 which only would’ve placed him eighth had it been clocked during qualifying…Corey Stephens made the bump spot with his ’88 351 Mustang at 11.75/117.11 but hit 11.65/119.56 in late timed trials. That was impressive enough but Stephens made one of the last runs of the night and blasted to an 11.36/118.32!…Ben Craven failed to make the cut in Tom Layton’s Pur Performance-sponsored 2006 Mustang with a tire-spinning 12.30/124.79 during qualifying but unloaded an 11.50 at a booming 129.11 mph in late timed trials…Brad Kimbler’s amazing LS2-powered ‘00 Z28 reached a new goal; the absolutely bone stock-appearing silver Chevy made the Super Sixteen field with an 11.07/121.54 but charged to a 10.99/121.51 and a 10.95/122.21 in late timed trials. The Washington, Missourian’s car is near-perfect example of how a naturally-aspirated machine on D.O.T. tires should work. Kimbler had a best “sixty” of 1.53 seconds…Jason Singleton’s red LS1-powered 2000 Camaro SS qualified at 10.85/126.46 but made late timed trials of 10.65/129.03 and a best-ever 10.47/128.14...Mike Churchill appeared with his dad’s renowned ‘79 454 Monte Carlo and pounded out a career-best 11.44/121.20 to qualify…Mike Hatleli returned to SCSS competition with his black 2005 Pontiac GTO and made the show with a great 11.64/122.31...Kevin Baustian, who has truly been thrashing on his orange 2009 6.1-liter Dodge Challenger, finally earned a Fastest Street Car qualifier decal with a best-ever 11.65 at 117.77...Although he failed to qualify with a best of 12.11, Wayne Isbell became the 236th member of the 120 MPH Club running 120.23 mph with his 2000 Mustang…There are only four more SCSS events remaining on the 2009 schedule.

SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2009 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Dan Harris St. Louis, MO 04 232 Mustang 0.004 12.468 107.78
RU Paul Weishaar, St. Louis, MO 09 183 BMW 135i -0.005 (foul) 12.515 111.50

After a one-week absence, Dan Harris returned to continue his amazing success in the 2009 St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. The St. Louisan also inched closer to becoming one of the most dominant drivers in division history as his ”Six Bang ’Stang” is now within reach of the most wins in a single season for any Tuner competitor.

Harris’ consistent low twelve-second Ford was far from the quickest car on the property. The return of Denny Christman’s incredible 122-inch turbocharged ’91 Eagle Talon gained most of the attention during qualifying. During opening night, (April 8th), the HillCo Axles All-Wheel-Drive terror clocked a phenomenal 10.61 at a whopping 135.62 mph during timed trials but had been parked for a complete rebuild through most of the year. A brilliant 10.69/134.60 led the Tuner field and officially made Christman the second quickest and fastest AWD machine in SCSS history as well as the 132nd member of the SCSS 10-Second Club and the 79th member of the 130 MPH Club. However, Christman made it clear he was simply making “soft test runs” on his new combination and declined to compete in eliminations.

Harris hit a best of 12.52/106.71 to qualify second but he took over the lead of the field with Christman’s withdrawal. Harris was followed by regular STSS competitor Paul Weishaar’s 183-cubic inch inline six-cylinder-powered 1009 BMW 135i at 12.86/105.83. The rest of the Top Five Tuners included Tom Schlachet’s black AWD turbo four-cylinder 2004 Subaru WRX STi, (a best-ever 13.35/103.75), and John Casbourne’s black supercharged rear-wheel-drive six-cylinder ‘05 Chrysler Crossfire, (a career-best 13.84/103.40).

The final round included a bit of history. While Weishaar was wheeling only the second BMW ever to make a Tuner Shootout final, it was the reaction times of both finalists which stunned even hardcore race fans. Weishaar left too soon by a mere five thousandths of a second to draw the redlight while Harris moved nearly simultaneously with the Bimmer and recorded a 0.004 RT! Both cars made their fastest runs of the event with Harris’ 12.46/107.78 ahead of Weishaar’s career-best 12.51/111.50. “With the twin-turbo setup in these cars”, said Weishaar of his 135i, “there’s really not much of a tuning change needed to run in the mid-twelves. The car is basically stock and, even with rear-wheel-drive, it doesn’t really spin the tires very often”. Harris, however, has survived tire spin and breakage spells with his nitrous oxide-aided 232-inch V6 Mustang but, after his sixth win of 2009, is within one victory of tying Patrick Jacobsmeyer’s 2005 romp. In addition, Harris is one final round appearance from surpassing Adam Corbett for the most finals ever by a Tuner! “We’ve pretty much just left the car alone and it has been fine”, said Harris after his sixth win of the season, “but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been tough to win these things!”.

SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2009 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Raymond Arthur, Edwardsville, IL 93 355 S-10 0.761 9.579 141.02
RU Tim Mallicoat, Jr., Collinsville, IL 80 500 C-10 -0.123 (foul) 11.791 115.90

While Ray Arthur has had a brutally tough season with his nine-second ”Suspicion“ ‘67 Camaro, he has always had a reliable “backup” for his racing efforts. His gorgeous “S-10 Revenge” Chevy pickup again proved its worth by scoring Arthur’s fourth career victory in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown.

“The truck is fast enough now that I know I can earn SCSS points even when the Camaro can’t race”, said Arthur, who’s involved in a tight point battle with Curtis Paulfrey. As the owner of the R&R Towing team, Arthur often has John Brawley drive the S-10 in Super Truck competition when Ray is at the wheel of his classic Camaro. When he needs a quick ride to keep pace in the point standings, however, he jumps in the truck. A 9.75/141.39 led the Super Truck field ahead of rival Don Moore, (10.39/125.59), whose Randy Morgan-tuned black 468-inch S-10 benefits from nitrous oxide injection like Arthur’s rig. The rest of the top five included Tim “Little Moose” Mallicoat at the wheel of his bronze M&M Automotive 500-inch 1980 Chevy C-10, (a best-ever 11.83/115.69), Gary Carter’s black 406-inch ’70 C-10, (falling from its 11.20 pace of last week to a 12.30/111.73), and Kenneth Sanders in his red ‘92 340 Dodge Dakota, (12.73/105.48).

Having debuted a new engine during the September 15th event, Moore and Morgan weren‘t pleased with the performance of their S-10 and elected to park the truck before eliminations began. That allowed Mallicoat, as the first alternate, to meet Arthur in the final round. Mallicoat’s only chance was a holeshot of ridiculous proportions and his redlight start wasn’t a surprise. Arthur stormed to a 9.57/141.02 while Mallicoat actually ran his best pass ever, an 11.79/115.90, in the loss. “I do this for fun”, said a grinning Arthur during winner’s circle ceremonies in front of the main grandstands, “and I can promise you I’m having fun! There are a lot of other things I could do with my time but, really, you just can’t beat this. This is what fun is all about!”.
