Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Anyone interested in this complete setup? I pulled it out of the Cutlass and am selling it all. Car (roller), engine, extras. I have several of the turbo control centers, a couple of the red air intake setups, extra manifolds, crossover and up pipes, an extra turbo (disassembled)....... I...

    Buick 350 w/carbed turbo?

If a 301 turbo setup can produce lets just say 7.5 psi (~1/2 atm) on a 301cid engine, then that corresponds to about 1.5x its NA amount of air correct? or 450in^3 If that is the case, then on a 350cid engine that 450in^3 of air is 1.3x the NA amount of air. call it 30% more for simplicitys...

    Buick 350 w/carbed turbo?

I also have an Ebay GT45 turbo that I used in a blow thru setup before. Think I could adapt it to a draw thru setup?

    Buick 350 w/carbed turbo?

I have seen his kits. I also heard that he is no longer making them. That Log style of exhaust manifold is what I plan to make for the passenger side. Stock exhaust manifold on the drivers side. But I dont want to go with a blow thru setup. Ive got the 301 turbo setup and thought it would...

    Buick 350 w/carbed turbo?

I have a Buick 350 that I am considering setting up with a carbed turbo from a 301 pontiac. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Anyone tried it? I would need some sort of adapter for the intake. Is the turbo just too small?

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

no actually its pretty smooth now rolling into the throttle like that, but it also depends on the cruise speed. A low cruise will feel "flatter" than starting from a higher rpm/speed cruise. but theres no "flat spot" like when you press the gas and nothing happens if thats what you mean. I...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Well I tried to up the boost to 12 psi and couldnt get it to quit knocking without dropping more than 4 degrees of timing. Seems like I have reached a limit for the current setup. To get more boost in there I will need either a more effective alky system or maybe a larger downpipe to help...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Q: What is the max boost you would recommend running on a relatively stock engine? How far should I try to push this thing?

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Thanks for your replies. Its great to hear from others who run these engines, your input is appreciated. I am running a 1978 engine with the early exhaust ports. The 79+ manifolds/headers wont fit unless I am mistaken. Without a BTM or some such device I am relegated to trial and error...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Thanks for your thoughts on it. I will be playing around with my homebrewed alky setup, trying to quantify its effectiveness, and will post the results here as I gather them. I am certain it wont be as good as a system designed to do what I need. On another note, I modified the distributor...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Thanks (I changed over to 100% washer fluid) I may try to find some ethanol or methanol at the hdwr store or the auto store and try that undiluted, see if it helps. I have also read online (where everything is true and correct) that alcohol sprayed at higher pressures atomizes more...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

I changed up the Alcohol spray stup to incorporate it into a makeshift cowl style cold air intake. I found a 2" tall Vector hood scoop (~13"x15") at Advance Auto #CZ277B. I cut a 6" square hole in the hood above the carb and mounted the spray nozzle off to one side where the scoop would cover...

New to Buick turbos, and sure as hell carburated turbos.

Yes I took the starter off a 1983 Buick 231, ran it on my 67 Oddfire 225, and then swapped it onto my current 1978 231 turbo engine.

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

Here is what I came up with for an Alcohol spray. This is a preliminary system so dont rag on it too much. I plan on improving it as I work on my air intake stuff. Constructive suggestions are appreciated. I used a generic washer pump from CarQuest with a 12V feed from the HEI lead...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

I have tinkered a bit with the timing. I can get about 34 degrees into the advance at 8-9lbs boost without audible pinging. When I go as high as 36 degrees (stock 16 initial 20 mechanical), I get audible pinging on WOT runs when the transmission shifts into 3rd (TH350) I used the lightest...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

SO are you running locked timing like Warwagon or are you running stock initial and mechanical and then using the BTM for boost retard? Running 87 would be nice. Its much cheaper than the 93 in CT.

    1978 231 turbo 6 build

Well I was wrong, not about the carb hat but about the cause of the ESC system triggering early. it was not the timing that caused the knocking and got the ESC to trigger and pull advance. It was my plug gap. I had been gapped at .055". When I regapped to .032" the timing drop issue...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

here is a little proof that the gap counts..... I just got done fiddling with my timing etc after regapping to about .032" Prior to the regap I was at .055" gap and my ESC system was pulling timing like crazy. So much that at part throttle I couldnt see the mechanical advance coming in with...

Timing and Boost on a carbed turbo6

I am running stock HEI. Regapped the plugs today and it was easier than I thought it would be to access them all. I had to disconnect the up and down pipes from the turbo for hand/arm clearance but thats it. I should mention that I plan to run this on 93 premium pump gas. Nothing...
