    gofstbuick? smog-related, but fringe & almost off-topic ...

I recently stumbled across the archive of new car "engine family" certifications on the ARB site, all the "A" and "P" series EOs all the way back into the '70s. I noticed two things: 1) the 1984 Riviera turbo had a "P" series EO -- certified under federal limits because it flunked the...

    '85 calibration PROM differences?

The factory parts catalog shows one calibration PROM for the '85 G-body Hot Air, broadcast code CMM. But the listing says "FED", it does not say "FED,CALIF". I know '85 Hot Air cars were sold in California (or more accurately, don't know that they weren't). Did the California cars come with...

bucking trend, looking for stock Hot Air turbocharger

As long as the housings are good and it can be rebuilt, that's good enough. Anyone have one to sell me?

member WFO ? Engine Assembly Manual ?

Site says he was "last seen" a little over two years ago. I started a "conversation" with him yesterday. No life from it yet. About a decade ago he mentioned having an Engine Assembly Manual, and that's what I want to talk to him about.

    cow manure

The governor just signed a bill that will limit how much methane cows can fart in the State of California. Did you know that vehicles emit methane? It isn't reduced by the catalytic converter, either.

    FS: California Prop 65 Stickers

I've got a truckload of them in boxes of 1000. Tell me how many and your Zip and I'll give you a shipped quote. I also have a slick little program that will generate them by the ream on your P-touch. Let me know.

what to do with this cam bearing

This is the Dura-Bond "oil control" front bearing for 14-bolt pan (no groove in block). As you can just make out (click on thumbnails for full-size), apparently while forming one of the edges, some tiny divots were ploughed into it. What would you do? I figure if I send it back I'll just get...

    paging gofstbuick please

Just for the record .... Is it considered smog legal, for an 84/85 motor in California, to replace the 84/85 ignition control module with the 86/87 version? This involves rearranging some of the wires in the harness connector, but is otherwise functionally equivalent. So does this require a...

86/87 ignition module on 84/85 motor in Calif?

The state of California says: installing an ignition system from one year of a motor onto another year of the same motor is illegal. But in this case it's just re-arranged wiring. Where coil current is limited (wire on 84/85, module on 86/87) has no affect on emissions, and in every other way...

    Bilstein manufacturing change

This pair of fronts arrived today from tirerack. Notice the part numbers, bar codes, etc, are all identical. The black one is stamped 010443 0949 H0. The other one is stamped 021243 0949 H0. This was a bit unnerving. I mean, what does it mean? lol

    oil temps w/aftermarket cooler

Thought I'd be clever, and bought an oil temp sender that replaces the pan drain bolt. There aren't many around and I guess now I know why. Set the wrench to 30 lb-ft and start turning, hear odd noises, finally the top of the sender snaps off entirely. But the bottom half wasn't even finger...

smog pump parts for non-a/c turbo?

Anybody have them? Mostly the mounting brackets, also the two routing valves. These brackets seem to be unique to G-body Carb Turbos without air conditioning: 1. An alternator adjusting bracket, which attaches at the water pump, which has provision on top for the smog pump swivel bolt...

    Plant Date Code

Aren't the stock factory motors supposed to have one stamped on the block somewhere? Where is it? AKA "Engine Assembly Code." Not talking about any of the cast-in stuff, or the VIN stamp. Thanks.

    heated o2 sensor?

I can smell the answer 150 miles away, but here in CA, is it not illegal to retrofit a heated o2 sensor onto these motors, since they never shipped with a heated one from the factory? The mantra here is "certified configuration" I know, and the heated o2 sensor won't be 100% the same (as an...

    Are these original or reman?

Are this ECM and MAF original '85 production units or remans? The MAF appears to have an '84 part number on it, were these also used in '85s? (The grunge by the connector is from a bar code sticker.)

aftermarket MAF: what do you get?

I posted this on the General Turbo Buick Tech forum and got nowhere. I thought about trying to link to the photos in that posting rather than duplicate them here, but like GM, decided to keep it complicated at the expense of waste. I did change the thread title here. Over there it was "MAF...

MAF mayhem -- what do you get?

My own case involves an '84 Hot Air motor, but I think the issues here are general enough. So I have all the air tubing and cleaner box parts, but no MAF. I study the market online, because local stores don't stock. I notice RockAuto has a "wholesaler closeout" on a reman by Standard "in...
