I have a refurbished stock turbo and I want to do something to minimize the surging from the compressor. what are my options? Thanks
Paul

I seen a video about it on U Tube somebody used a filter assembly from a small car to fix it for them.

When I upgraded my turbo, I decided on an 4" S ported shroud.....no compressor surge, even with my Precision SLIC.
If you can get your hands on a Tornado, it should reduce or eliminate your problem .
Do a search on this device.

Never had the issue with stock turbo and inter cooler but the car mentioned above they had taken a intake off a old 84-87 300zx. I have had the issue with front mount and big turbo...

if your encountering surge it sounds like your stock turbo is a ta49 .. the turbo is the cause the big neck SLIC only makes it worse but the maf is what makes it more noticable ..one fix is go maf-less speed density

I've been having this issue after the dutt neck and porting on the stock turbo and inlet bell.

My problem is when I let off the gas while building boost the air back flows and causes the compressor to flutter.

thats not what i would call surge ..surge is when you part throttle boost like to pass a car and reach around 17psi up to 20 psi and the compressor starts surging basically bucking the motor and can be very severe on a ta49 with a maf based ecu
what you describe is what i would call horse winny .. youll experience that when you build boost then slam the throttle blade closed the pressure has to go some where so it rushes back out through the compressor wheel ..kn filter setup makes it louder than it would be on the stock aircleaner setup . a blowoff valve helps to lessen that as it just wooshes the excess pressure out but blowoffs and mafs dont work well together

I was talking to Reed from WORK turbo about this, and he told me that the TA49 and TE44 turbos were a bit prone to surge.

OP-
You could always purchase a new compressor cover that is ported, or call WORK Turbo and ask them if they could machine your stock compressor cover to add anti-surge ports in it. I've never asked him if this is possible since I've never heard of a stock turbo surging...but like Pacecarta said, I think you probably have a TA49 if it is surging.

So basically some kind of restrictor/ airflow disruption will help this? It does get kind of annoying...I have a home made 4" big mouth kit with a 3" maf to the turbo... There is no cruising and giving it say half throttle without it happening, it would have to be say 3/4 throttle for it to just boost up and go without surging...Mike

Op... Sorry for hijacking...

My 6162 had an awful partthrottle surge

I have a new s cover billet version sitting on my work bench freshly arrived from mr cotton at a hell of a price..... thanks Jack!

Run a blow off valve

Boost hammering back on the turbo shortens the turbo life. My first turbo lasted 30k before I had to replace the center section. The second center section lasted 180k with a BOV or what ATR called a sneeze valve was installed. I sold it last year when I was doing my build and as far as I know it's still going.

I've seen the debate on venting a BOV to atmosphere with a MAF setup but I experienced no problems in 25 years.
