Raceway Park In Englishtown, NJ Has Stopped All Drag Racing Events.

So then, why would they do that? I would think it would be a huge money maker for them.

They are making money on the other stuff.they are getting a lot of pressure from those that move next to a racetrack and think they have the right to complain about noise:cool:

Lucky for nh, there is a circle track and a Sig Sauer gun range all in a 1 mile radius of NED. There's good support for racing as long as the curfews are followed.

Is it me or is it that the whole sport of drag racing doesn't draw crowds like it did in the past?… I remember going to Englishtown, Sanair and the stands were full of spectators but now you can count the amount of spectators on the fingers of youre hands… What happened?? A lot of these big tracks are closing one after the other with no new tracks being built anymore. It makes me wonder if drag racing slowly dying?…

P.S: I think part of the problem is that NHRA itself is more interested in big name professional racers than local "little guy" racers. That's a mistake because the local racers are there at the track week after week and it's them who bring a reguler revenue to them. The big name racers only come once, maybe twice a year and you don't hear from them after that. The other part of the problem comes from people who buy land close to the track (which has been there for decades) build houses and then complain about the noise. Seems to me that if you don't like noise, common sense should tell you not to buy some land close to a race track or an airport…no?
Here's a picture of me on the Raceway Park starting line…

It had been picking up though, especially on Ratchet Friday's which is essentially new, and has been reeling in the younger generation. This really devastated a lot of people, especially from New York because now they have to commute even further into New Jersey to race. Look at the crowds on this Ratchet Friday last year starting at 1:09 into the video, look at the lanes outside waiting to get in, it was like that just about every time they hosted that kind of a night. It was absolutely mobbed...

I've seen some pretty decent crowds at NED on Wednesdays and Fridays from what they were about 5 years ago. They started a "list" and that seemed to get a few extra racers go to as well. I think the new high hp rwd cars has added to the ranks. See plenty of Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers. There's always a few Brodozers too. Some Fridays there are small groups that show up and they have some good cars. The fart pipe crowd has lessened but there are some hard core 10 second Hondas. When our group of 4 or 5 TBs show up It's fun to hear the comments in the stands.(y)

Maybe switching to IHRA ..?

Nope, leasing the drag strip portion to Co-Parts.

e town was going down hill for a long time now & nhra will die a slow death as well! its a shame

Very true that it was going down hill but what do we have now...nothing. Bitch that the place sucked when it was open, bitch now that the place closed and have no where to go.

Hopefully Atco and Island step up their game.

I'm all for drag racing but how can a petition force a private business do what the public wants? The choice is the Napps. If they got a $75 million lease deal, I don't blame them for closing shop.

They are keeping other loud events such as dirt bikes and monster trucks although nothing is loud like top fuel.
Maybe other factors?

I agree, but then again I also disagree. When it comes to drag racing, the United States obviously does not have an unconditional obligation to keep tracks open and operated. The sport itself as well its' enthusiasts needs owners and corporations to provide the outlet to keep it alive. More and more tracks are closing, so although you may not blame the Napps for the choice they have made, when we're down to one track left in the United States, you will be singing a different tune, and that day seems to be inevitable with the way things are going lately. Hopefully Long Island will be able to capitalize and bring back drag racing to New York with the loss of Raceway Park. If that ever happens, and it seems to be coming sooner than people think in Long Island, then whatever remains of E-Town, as well as the others like Atco, Island, etc, will pretty much be history. We're actually considering moving back to New York ourselves now, I mean there were other factors of course, but the loss of the track just may finalize our decision. From a local residents perspective, It's only been a few days since the announcement and already the area does not feel the same without Raceway Park, and March will be here in a blink of an eye. Very sad for the area, and the local businesses that depended on the track. Local track and project cars are already being put up for sale....

My perception is that etown was in the farmland of South Jersey. Long island being close to the city should have died a quicker death due to rich Hollywood types bitching.

Your perception is incorrect. Old Bridge/Englishtown is actually slightly North of the central line that dissects NJ. It is 15 minutes from Staten Island, one of the 5 boroughs of NYC. So depending on where you live in the city, e-town is probably closer for you. Obviously Queens, bordering Nassau County is probably closer to LI tracks, and parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx as well. I have run at e-town, Atco, Capital in MD, and Cecil County. But 90% of the time I was going to e-town.

This was coming for a while. Pure and simple, gentrification. The upper middle class who ran out of NYC and North jersey settled in the central jersey region and they don't like us low brow folk. The other motorsports if I recall are daytime only events, whereas us dragers are primarily nighttime. We were keeping little Chaz and Boopsie up at night. Oh well. To he!! with them.
