I have a 87 GN with no compression in cylinder #5. I am pretty sure the classic car dealership knew what they were selling me but now I currently have a shiny boat anchor. I am in NW Indiana and looking for a good mechanic or a nice engine to buy. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that.

Please forgive me if I seem abrupt, but use this opportunity to dig into learning the technical aspects of these cars to the best of your abilities. There are few knowledgeable mechanics/engine builders worthy of your money. Unfortunately they are outnumbered by those who are not.

#'s matching car? I'd keep it that way and repair what you have.

how much wrenching re: possible engine removal and re-install would you be doing? Or would you rather have a turn-key service where you drop off the car, the shop does the tear down / inspection / confirmation; a machine shop does what ever, if needed be done; the shop puts it back together and you receive the car fully repaired and functional.

In your other thread re: summit breather tank, you noted this turbo Buick stuff is new to you...

for mechanical shops, I'll mention these...others will add more ideas...

Bruce at Aggressive Performance in MI. link => Aggressive Performance Buick Grand National Parts & Service

Brian Lorenz is in eastern OH. link => Lorenz Racing & Performance

Weber family @ Weber Automotive in N. Olmstead, OH. link => Custom Engine Building and Rebuilding

Thanks for the information. I will probably be going with the “turn-key” option.

All great references.
I'd add Kip in Southern IN as a possibility.
He's in Jeffersonville.

Cedar Lake. I found an engine builder in Crown Point with decades of experience. The engine is there now.
