Can't Compete with This

Sept. Of 1977 Chuck. Turns out Marty lives about a mile and a half from where I did, and we know the same folks too! Crashed my H2 Kawasaki about a mile or so from his house!
I was born in Chi town, moved to Spfld. then Rochester, then Phx,az. In 1977. Ran around with folks from Auburn, Chatham and Virden too.
If u remember the thread about putting a solid top on a T Top car, and the Chebbie trucks with the tops ripped off, that body shop was in Auburn. I worked at Allis/ Chalmers for about 7 years, and was a fixture at Motion Raceway (in the middle of the cornfield) almost every weekend running a dark green 69 GTO and a white small block, injected, front motored, dragster. Also ran a "long for it's time"(about 190" wheelbase) black, front motored tunnel rammed ex- Garlits dragster with a Clutch flite!
I also ran at Dragcity between Spfld. and Rochester, and occasionally Beardstown drag way too. Also went to every gun show from St.Louis to Peoria and Champaign. Went dancing all around there too, with the Beneld Colliseum being a favorite. "The Guild" was the house band, and Michael McDonald (Doobie Bros. And solo career) was the front man/lead singer.
Then, like now, I get all over! But in Az!
As I remember, you said u were a Chevy Zone Mgr. Or Rep, out of Champaign?

" and Virden too."
You didn't happen to know Stan Lomelino of Virden, did you?
He was a well-known fuel flathead dragster runner.
Stan was a farmer/welder/etc. and had some really neat stuff.
Unfortunately, Stan passed several yrs ago at the age of 89.
Stan was a well known racer. Here's a link to more info. The guys on the HAMB were asking.
I ran at the Peoria dragstrip, US30, Rockford, Cordova, Beardstown, and several others.
My Chevy stint was out of zone 47, Peoria.
Really a small world!
PartyPad.jpg

This was shot at the Peoria strip.
The ol "Party Pad' was a well-known street terror.
A late friend of mine's widow has his collection of pictures, videos, etc from that era.
I hope to make copies of them before we're all gone!

That's completely bad ass man, 'Murica cool!

Here's a pic of the Peoria dragstrip "Program". Note it was $.15!
Stan is in the "records" page. I think they misspelled his name.
We had no et clocks, only a mph readout.
There were 2 "judges" at the end of the track. They determined the winner!
Fun days!

Amazingly small world! Kinda "shoots" the idea of Witness protection program all to hell!
Yes, I knew "Flathead Stan!" He helped me with my first Jr. Fuel Dragster! The ex "Bomarito & Smith car. And he distributed O2 and acetylene tanks out of his welding shop. I last saw his flattie rail at his shop in the late 60s.
I ran around with his nephew Larry Lomelino and ex wife Diane for years!
Along with Diane's older brother Dale Jaeger and his wife Nancy. I knew a lot of other folks in the Auburn and Chatham areas too. Larry and I worked together at Certified Tanks & Equipment before he got the body shop up and running. I later worked at Larry's "Lomelino auto body" when laid off from Allis/Chalmers, and my dad worked at the Kinkaid station for the Commonwealth Edison powerplant.
Before we moved to Springfield, we lived in South Chicago, about 4 blocks from the bridge over the little Calumet River where the "Blues Brothers" jumped the old Mount Prospect police car in the first movie. My aunt lived at 78th and Racine near where Sean Connery was supposed to live in the movie "Untouchables."
Larry did the ripped off truck roofs we discussed in another thread!

I'm coming up on 59. If I thought of crashing my CRF I'd be to scared to throw a leg over it. Same goes for my R1 and Harley. I never think about it.

I'm not scared! Ya gonna die of something, and ya gotta have fun till then.
I leave the line at 7800, and shift at 9200.
A recent night race at Wild Horse Pass, notice no headlight either!
In the Globe/Superior area, there are 5 copper strip mines about 50 miles from here. Lots of forest up by Flagstaff, and everything from sand dunes to desert scrub. Also We race and ride year round.
And lots of lakes with NO speedlimits!!
They also film Street Outlaws not far from the shop!
Even the mini bike isn't stock!
Boat motor: 572,14-71 hi-helix, intercooled, solid roller, Brodix, notice the nozzles on both sides under the carbs...
Getting the TIMINATOR thing, yet?
