My boyfriend has an 87 grand National parked in the garage which smells of gas very strongly. He thinks it’s because the vehicle has no catalytic converter. But I don’t feel that is accurate can anyone give me some advice on what I should do? I cannot take the smell anymore

Give me the car and I'll live with the smell.
Or get a new BF.
JK!
The smell is likely due to the smog system being removed or inoperative.
He's probably wrong on the cat being gone, as the cause.
Lots of other locations for the smell to come from.

your worried about the gas smell? wait till you see the oil stains it leaves. JK, check the return line that is supposed to be terminated into the charcoal canister, if it is venting into nothing, get some kind of filter for it , as brad had mentioned above.

Mine did the same thing, the return line to the (removed) charcoal canister was the culprit. Grabbed a small foam filter to plug the hose, smell was gone.

Don't cap the hose completely, it needs to breathe otherwise the tank can't pull in air and you'll end up hurting the fuel pump.

Look underneath the passenger seat at the exhaust system. Does it have a catalytic converter or a straight piece of pipe.
If you are unsure of what it looks like. Post a pic.
Also check for fuel leaks after driving it.

If its a real strong raw gas smell its most likely a leak from somewhere, otherwise these cars have all kinds of smells coming out of them like an old Grandpa

It’s a straight raw strong smell. Smells like a gas on the ground at a gas station. There’s no leaks on my garage floor. But my boyfriend did have music installed so I’m thinking maybe they hit the fuel tank idk

It could be dripping and riding down something and soaking in somewhere, gas evaporates quick when it hits the cement
check all lines front to back led by your nose

Consider moving it out of the garage until it's fixed if it smells that strong.

Vapor can build up, there will be a spark from something, and the whole thing goes up like a Russian ammo dump.

Does it have this? (minus the gauge)

Looking under the hood from right in front of the left headlamp.

I just put an online fuel filter on my open vent hose(charcoal canister removed) and the gas smell stopped. This works.
