Do I need to remove my hood to remove my engine?

A few questions please...
I removed my transmission and I’m ready to take the engine out. Do I need to remove the hood and or radiator?
Ive heard there was a way to prop the hood on the windshield without breaking it.
The car is on a lift and I would like to put the engine back in with the transmission connected, thinking that’s the easiest way?

You do not have to remove the hood. Disconnect the hood shocks and prop the hood up with a long pole, broom stick, or what ever you have handy. There's plenty of room to remove the engine with a engine hoist. I do it all the time.
 
You don't even have to remove the hood shocks.

Just put the crane hook as close to the plenum as you can get it (and make it as short as possible). As you jack up the engine, just pull the crane back as it follows the hood.

If you remove the plenum, you'll have a million miles of room.

The only thing I remove from the engine is the starter and X-over pipe (and I doubt they really have to come off)
 
I’ve pulled the engine lots of times and only once did I try the hood on the windshield thing. Strong wind came out of nowhere and the windshield cracked. You can pull the engine with the hood on and the radiator in without a problem. The transmission has always been in the car when I’ve put the engine in. I’m sure you can do with the trans attached but I never have. The cherry picker I use is a couple inches short of being able to get the engine all the way back to the transmission without getting creative. the front the bumper stops the hoist from going back any more so I have to extend the boom a little bit. I leave the hood on with hinges in tact and just grab as close to the intake as possible.

I can take the plenum off. That should help. Didn’t think about taking the starter off...

have you put the the engine attached to the transmission in this way?
 
I have never had the need to pull the transmission and engine at the same time. Getting to the bolts to attach the transmission is a PITA so that would make sense to put the together first. If I was going to do that I would use the engine hoist tool that allows you to change the angle as you drop it in. I would also put some weight on the back side of the engine hoist.

I've never pulled the eng/trans at the same time.

Since I don't have a universal socket, and a 10foot extension, this will zip the top bolts right out...

(and, yes, that's a 14mm. They fit better on 9/16" bolts than a 9/16")

I do have an angle attachment. I know how hard it was to take the two apart. I didn’t want to put them back together laying on my old, broke down back.

ive never pulled them both at the same time either. Those bell housing bolts made my life miserable AND Hercules put them on. I want to try to put them together then put it in to make life easier...hopefully
 
I always pull the engine and trans together. You dont have to. Pull the hood shocks and if you have an engine tilter it would probably be pretty easy. I use a nylon strap under intake to lift mine. I have done plenty and I work by myself.Good luck
 
Y'all know I have to be different. If something can go wrong it will go wrong. I'd outline the hinge on the hood with a chalk pencil, how much extra will it take to remove it since you have a helper. With it out of the way it can't slip, fall or anything else.
