Power steering pump fitting question.

My old mechanic had a bottle of Wynn's magic fluid for whiny Ferd power steering systems.

Might work if available....

Real power steering fluid I think has no dye. :p

I used house brand “power steering fluid”, fluid is not my issue, after my hydroboost conversion I got the issue, did a bunch of extras, baffled bigger reservoir added a separate return from the hydro system to that reservoir added a power steering cooler. Had it manageable with very minimal whine then slowly over last summer it got worse again noticed the supply hose to the pump was soaked in fluid along with everything else down there and pulled it all apart and the hose was pretty hard and not sealing well so I decided to try and make that hose into a AN fitting type hose and eliminate that potential leak which would cause air to enter the system. So when my new pump arrives and I purchased this pump and fittings and such and happened to click on a complete front mount IC kit while in the process. Gonna have a stock location stretched intercooler up for sale soon if anyone is interested. Appreciate the input everyone has put in the thread. I’m hoping to get good results from this conversion and get this hydroboost set up better.

That's pretty common. Hydroboost conversoins tend to uncover lots of pumps that can handle steering just fine, but can't do steering and braking.

From what I've read, not one of the parts house pumps are up to the task either. If it were me, I'd make sure I had a pump that at least worked out of the box before I stared tapping for AN fittings and stuff. .....Or just say ''screw it'' and go vacuum (like I actually did).

My cardone pump lasted just a few weeks before it went. I sent the pump to Lee Power Steering in CA to have them rebuild it. They rebuild the old pump and put a pressure valve in to handle the hydro boost system. Also got an in-line filter for it. They can put the AN fittings on the pump or you can get it with the stock setup.

from what i hear it is, ive got a decent amount of money and time into this system and id like to get it perfected if possible, and id imagine the most reman pumps are just really tossed together and put new seals in and shipped. i just received a new pump, unsure who rebuilt it and how its going to work but its already fitted with AN's and i just have to bolt it on and see what happens.

ill keep that name in mind just incase i need it down the road, i just got a new pump already fitted and ready to go, even polished! not that it matters but my dad started up this "polished" thing under my hood and i seem to be stuck with it now so why not. going to post up my new toys here in a bit.

well i guess ill give a update on some progress i have been making, so far got the new pump, some fittings and got it fitted the best i can for the time being, also doing some upgrading on other parts, new FMIC, and also putting a set of OE replica offset wheels on it too, just don't like the centerline look and they are a PIA to take on and off.. so here is some pictures of all said stuff.its been in the below zero temps here the past couple of days so just have been buying stuff haha, the power steering pump has a nice polish but if you are looking for "show quality" this may not be your route, ill drive my car any chance i get in the summer months so it does not have to be perfect. the intercooler fit well but it seems tight on the up and down pipes and the silicon connector on the outlet of the turbo does not line up very well and not sure what to do at this point but i will figure something out. all i have for now. best pictures i can get being in a tight garage and a old iphone.

well it has seemed to all fall apart, am i the only one who has a CCW rotation P/S pump on their car? cant seem to find a fitted pump that is that rotation... slightly mad right now.. but its only my fault for not really doing my research. any suggestions? id rather not go back to a stock pump because i cant seem to get good threads in the pump for my fitting. almost out of options.

All the 86/87 PS pumps are CCW. I’m not sure what the fitting thread is for the pressure side. I have some metric Oring to AN fittings here I want to see if they fit my other PS pump. The rebuilt pump I got back from Lee Power Steering has been working good so far.

If you don't mind taking the pump apart, the cam ring can be flipped over to reverse the pump rotation. That is if the Type-II pump uses the same basic design:

im talking with a guy now about why cant we just pull the pump apart and reverse the rotation? cant be that complex for a power steering pump... dont got nothing to lose at this point. but i actually might try that. what style pump are you talking about if it uses the same basic design as what other pump? i wish i would of kept that pump i broke and it would of been perfect to take apart and see.

i looked at the vacuum set ups and ended up going to h.boost, i modified a reservoir from TR parts and added a separate return and also a cooler to slow the flow down, it works but i just think i have a leaky return hose which is sucking air, i also believe i removed the factory pump and feed hose so i think its time for a upgrade. i got a tap coming today and going to hit the parts store for some JIC fittings and try an get this thing buttoned up. on the next note i need to go in a tighten every intercooler bolt and bracket...... anyone have a front mount IC laying around willing to part for cheap? lol worth a try anyway.... would like to clear up some room in the front of this motor and stop tightening these bolts every damn day...
Where did you install the cooler? any pictures?

nevermind i see TC series.

The diagram of the pump I posted is from the factory service manual ('87). Note that the pump you purchased is listed as the same, from Summits web site:

Power Steering Pump Model: GM Type 2 (Saginaw TC series)

Which if it is, a flip of the cam ring will change it to a reverse rotation pump.

If you convert to AN fittings, the pump feed is -10AN and is low pressure, high pressure side is -6AN for the pumps output

Now that’s what I’m talking about. It’s goin to be attempted, it’s only money anyway. Me and 87national are gonna test and see. Thanks man!
