OK... Although not much 2-stroke action any longer, how about some Isle Of Man footage?

Here is my kind of 2 stroke!

CR500 was a beast. I had an 89 CR500 and an 87 YZ490. I had many YZ250's and CR250"s. I often wished I still had one but I would never ride it. I do still have a mint DR650 for gravel travel that I love.

89 was a great year both Metallica and Honda were at their angriest, had a 250r thing looked great in all red and friggin ripped, would love to of experienced a 500. Im doing the Transamerica trail in Sept this year will be buying a new bike for it in the next few days, looking at both dr650 and klr, leaning towards klr cuz will be slabbing it quite a bit in between, how is the dr on road?

My '86 cr250 was the best off-road bike I've ever owned. I sold it a few years after getting the GN. I still miss it LOL.

The two stroke 500's were beasts! A friend had a kx500 so I had a chance to play on them all. While my lap times were faster on a 250 than the 500, something about the 500 were just mean. My brother and I both had them. We still talk about it today. The 500 could throw so much roost that it was used as a tool. On the track when riders were faster than us we would use the roost of the bike to back them off. If they were not wearing chest protectors and hand guards they were in big trouble.

I would love to do the Transamerica Trail. I've never ridden a KLR but I've read a bunch about them as the DR and KLR are like the GN and Mustang in the day. I don't think you can go wrong with either bike. The KLR is deffinatly set up more for highway riding. The DR will crush it off road. I've had two DR's now just because they are so simple to work on and never ever need to be worked on. The DR has not changed from 1996 to current so there is tons of after market support and easy to find a used parts as they all are the same. I don't do much highway riding but the DR is very capable. I did a 300 mile one way seven years ago to a bachelor party and the bike will run 80mph no problem. For my use of gravel travel and exploring off road the DR is better. Surprisingly the DR will carve corners on slab like no other bike. Much lighter. If you plan lots pavement the KLR is probably a better choice. Just the small windshield will make riding more comfortable. It too has lots of after market support and forum support. If your not a member ADVRIDER you should be. All the must do mods to the KLR and the support you will need are there. Good luck in your purchase.

I owned a Kawasaki KL-600 for a short while. It was an ungainly ill-handling beast with really poor brakes.

I suspect the KLR version must be much better. It has to be!

Still have a yz 125. I dug it out of storage this winter and cleaned it up. Hope to take it out for a spin soon. Probably forgot how to ride it, 4 stroke has made me lazy. I did spend 10 minutes on one at the track in December that got the ball rolling on mine

Appreciate your reply.. agree with your description of the 500's, I'd see them around from time to time n when they were in powerband they sounded evil like it was meant to hurt you lol.. ive had the roost treatment happen to me not cuz I was fast by any means but because I was in there little practice area it's surprising the force it hits u with lol.. the klr is a pig I know but I think it's my best chance of getting from New England to Oregon via the tat then slab to Phoenix to see my Arizona family, probly fly home at that point as I have 39 days to do it and get my ass back to work. I'm sure I'll be wishing I had the dr650 once I hit Colorado.. I've spent time on advrider, read some interesting ride reports, gonna have to register n ask questions cuz I'm crash coursing my preparation for the next few months.. did some shopping today so far I'm looking at $6500 out the door, includes 6.25% ma tax for a new 2018 klr.

Search https://www.searchtempest.com/ for a used bike. You will buy for half the price and the bikes are the same from old to new. My current bike had 3200 miles no mods and paid $3000 for it. Absolutely mint. shop around and save big.

I had a Buell Millennium X1 (#75 of 800) that was a lot of fun. It wouldn't fit the five of us, so now it's a camper. Lol
