I think this thread is more along the lines of turbo builder. To me there is a semantics thing in play as some builders put turbos together using parts manufactured by someone else and others such as Garrett, BW, Etc that build turbos using parts that they manufacture.

It would be nice if Work and Borg had a chart matching the turbo to convertor like Patrick Rubio did with Precisions turbos. Maybe the vendors for Borg and Work could do that for us. Just a thot.

Is this chart posted somewhere in this forum?

It was...but it's down. I have an idea why. Patricks back on the board here...he just bought a TR. PM RUQWKNF...that's Patricks handle on here. He's forgotten more about turbos than anyone will ever learn. When it comes to turbos...he's the man...period.

If "he's the man" why do his turbo's break all the time? Would never buy a PTE turbo. "than anyone" hmmm, seems to me Reed is a pretty smart guy.....

I agree he is the man.. just like reed is the man as well..

Turbos fail regardless of make.

Brad,

That is a great idea! I will be contacting Reed and working with him to generate a long list of all the different turbos that Work and BW offer, and what convertor is recommended for each one.

It may take me a bit to do, because Work offers more different turbo types than any other company I can think of, and I want to make sure that I address all the turbos that pertain to our Buicks, and also the larger 4-bolt turbos for those making high HP numbers, or those folks who get some Gee M Racing headers off us and get the 4-bolt flange put on it ;)

Reed is not only an amazing turbo builder who has over 20 YEARS experience building turbos, but also an amazing and kind person. Very few and far between do you come across someone as genuine as Reed.

That is not to say that Patrick isn't those things. I have heard nothing but kind words about Patrick. Since I haven't dealt with him personally, I can't speak to his character, but I have never, in my 13 years involved with Buicks, heard someone speak ill of Patrick.

The converter requirements depend on the mass flow of the engine more than the turbo. 60lbs/min with a given turbo or 90lbs/min with the same turbo probably shouldn’t be using the same converter

I've had this Precision CEA 6262 from pretty much the first day they came out. I bracket/grudge race the car every weekend spring to fall. I run it right around 7 flat at 100. It has somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2,500 7 flat passes on it. It's been very durable...to say the least. I've had zero issues with it. Patrick was always here for us and kept us abreast of everything. I had a chat with Tyler earlier and he was gonna call Reed and start posting stickies for us like Patrick did. Stay tuned.

None! I'm smarter then that..... If you've had good luck with them, then great, I'm happy it worked out for you. Look, I know this topic (PTE) is very contentious on this board and I'm not here to belittle, besmirsh or make disparaging remarks about PTE turbos or anybody who likes/uses them, but it's pretty evident that BW and Garrett turbos are superior products. I think the reason BW and Garrett have not had the success on GNs like PTE has had is because of the Buick housing and wastegate configuration. It's a lot easier and cheaper to use a PTE then a BW or Garrett.

How many people out there use a PTE 6262 or 6265 on this board? A lot....seems like that's all I ever read...... Hey I'm looking to upgrade my turbo what do ya all think about a PTE 6262...... How many times have we seen that? A lot.....and that's because it's plug and pray. But if you wanted to use a BW ERF series or a Garrett GTX series turbo you're gonna have to spend some time and money changing things around.

Not saying that it never happens, but you rarely read/hear about BW or Garrett turbos breaking. I realize everything breaks at some point in time, but not at a rate that PTE seems to break.

Read the Stage ll forum, most of those applications are using BW or Garrett. Why?

I have a stage2 and most of the guys are running PTE, just about all class winners are using PTE turbo's.

With respect, Sir, that is no longer the case that a Borg Warner / Garrett/ WORK turbo isn't plug-n-play for the Buick.

The EFR turbos are VERY specialized, and are not your common turbo. Comparing a EFR turbo to the rest of Borg Warner's line is like comparing a Pro Mod turbo that PTE offers to their Entry Level turbos...they just are built with completely different goals in mind...

Reed offers a billet 6262 turbo that we are actually having a special on for $970. The normal retail cost is $1,275 for a Buick 3-bolt housing unit.... We (RPS) is having a special for this turbo for JUST $970!!!! That is over $100 LESS than that PTE offers, yet this turbo includes a 360degree billet severe duty thrust bearing, new bearing housing, and a billet dynamic seal backplate, AND INCLUDES A 1 YEAR WARRANTY THAT IS ACTUALLY HONORED AND WE WON'T BLOW YOU OFF AND COME UP WITH SOME EXCUSE AS TO WHY IT IS YOUR FAULT...WE ACTUALLY WARRANTY OUR PRODUCTS AND HAVE THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE ON THE MARKET. PERIOD. You try to call PTE and get a turbo warrantied and let me know how that goes! With Reed / RPS, we honor our warranties, and our word is our bond.

I just had a turbo warrantied with PTE and didn't have an issue at all. They also overnighted to me so I could make it to Ford vs Buick in Oklahoma. The hardest part of the whole process was finding time to ship it to them. They paid for overnight shipping.

Also, I purchased the turbo through Full Throttle and they actually called PTE and got the RMA for the return. The folks at Full Throttle were very helpful and prompt. They didn't repair my turbo, they sent me a brand new one.
