Powermaster to Hydroboost conversion

I just finished my swap after a few snags. I decided to use the 10-1984 master cylinder over the plastic 10-1740 just because when I put them side by side the all metal 10-1984 looks a lot sturdier.

For the first time since I've owned the car I can trust my brakes. With the stock brakes up front and the s10 stuff on the rear it'll slam you to the windshield. On the street with cold tires it now holds 12 pounds of boost as compared to 3-5 psi before. I love hydroboost.

Congrats. A conversion without snags isn't fun. Haha. Glad you got the results you were looking for. Just the other day I almost put myself through the windshield due to people who treat stop signs like yield signs.

I am in the middle of putting a HB system on my 87 GN and I am wondering how much power steering fluid I should pick up. Is 2 quarts enough or do I need more?

Thanks
David

I'd grab 2 quarts, just never know if you have to take it apart for a faulty reman part once its running. That's why I buy new instead of reman. BTDT.

I would like to add that there is no need to remove any accessories, place the belt over the edges of the pulleys and it moves the pulley far enough to use a wrench and remove/install the old/new line, it will not go anywhere because of the ribs and make sure to leave it within the edges of the tensioner pulley for added insurance as it is risky to put your hand with it under load but the amount of time, busted knuckles and cursing saved seems to be worth it as it only took me 30 minutes to hook up all the lines and wasted most of my time placing the pedal stud inside the damned eyelid from the booster which I finally accomplished by taking the driver side nuts as far as possible and then 1/4 out on the passenger and pushing the boosters towards the passenger side with some force.
To put the new line in position, simple drag it over the top of the pump return line and with very little effort it goes where its supposed to be, make sure to have the other side loose as to allow you to spin the hose freely. My lines needed a lot of massaging to get the bends to match and not overlap or run into the other line next to it.
Another thing that made my install very easy is the fact that is cold outside and last night was 15* because the power steering fluid had the consistency of light honey so fluid loss was minimal and the only air was in the lines as I barely spilled any.

This is the tee I used.

Installed with the hose clamps as there isn't much pressure on it.

I'm curious how most of you guys said this conversion is so simple. The pressure line that routes from the booster to the pump for me is so NOT close or oriented correctly that I don't know how massaging the line will make it fit. I actually ordered another 91660 line hoping it would clocked a little different. Unfortunately, the 2nd line seems even more further away. How is the line to be routed going down past the steering shaft!?! Close to returning the pressure lines and build them, but that would cost WAY MORE.

This conversion IS simple....unless your mechanical skills are severely limited. The hoses fit fine if installed and SLIGHTLY modified as described in the original post. I have done many conversions with no issues. I would suggest reading more in depth and a touch more patience?

Turbonut85, I'll try to avoid taking your remark as an insult. There is NOTHING I haven't been able to this car and many others since being old enough to work on cars.
It's not a Hot Air car and without completely rebending the hardlines of the pressure hose it won't clear. That if I don't want the rubber hose portion laying on the DS header or pressing on the jeep steering shaft.
I've read over TexasT's write-up on Ihadav8, but his massaging of the line isn't as off as mine.

2toneNV. Just take a break and sharpen the axe. It will work. It is a pain to put on but it works. Just need to bend it to shape first then try little by little. It pissed me off for a while, but I eventually got it on.

Not an insult...just an observation. And the conversion I originally posted, and all the conversions I have done were on intercooled cars....since this setup came factory on most hot air cars, I wouldn't consider it a "conversion" on hot air cars...lol. The lines DO fit without touching the header....did you double check the part number I originally posted?

I have a 82 diesel regal that I bought for a parts car it has this system installed maybe I will just use it

WOWZERS! Just read all 14 pages :) Going to order the parts tomorrow and swap out my vacuum system right away. (Never have been impressed with it, and the lack of assist immediately coming off boost really sux)
Thank you to the OP and all those before me that posted and asked questions. Hard to believe there could actually be anything more to ask,..... but then,... there's me. :)

1. Would a 3/8" Y fitting be better ? If not for flow, maybe just hose layout ?
2. What differs on this swap compared to the original car the HB came from (84 Regal,3.8 VIN9) that makes the pressure lines a challenge ? Seems like they would have fit the production car without any snags.

And here's a tip that you guys can use to help in the bleeding process. I see some go thru the trouble to raise the front wheels off the ground, (I'm too lazy for that) so a neat trick that allows you to easily swing the tires back and forth without either scrubbing off tire tread, or if you have a nice painted garage floor, without scuffing it up.... you can make some el-cheapo turn plates by taking a couple gallon size zip-loc bags, spray WD-40 inside them, then roll the front tires onto the closed bags. Now the tires will glide effortlessly on the plastic.

Ordered up my parts, but looks like after 7 years the master cylinder supply is running thin. Autozone and O'Reilly do not have them anymore,... as in cannot even get. Two other parts places in town wanted $87 and $128. I did find a reman (10-1984) thru Advance for $55 and $13 shipping.
We might have to start converting with the the aluminum body master option.

Anyone have a picture of what that master looks like installed ?

I used a Wilwood unit and AN lines, not the cheapest, but works well, I love the plastic bag idea, !

As far as the massaging the pump line below the ac compressor goes, are you sure you have the correct line? I didn't think it was too hard as noted in my install thread. I did attempt install several times and removed again to get the hard line just where I liked it and where it wouldn't rub on anything. How about some pix of what you are working with. We have a pretty sharp bunch of members and most willingly put out info.

Thanks for the pic Rick, that doesn't look too bad. Definitely nice to have that other option.

Was the other part of your post regarding fitment directed at me ? I haven't begun the install yet and so far have no issues. But the last post before mine relating to fitment was back in 2016.

2toneNV
that part about the lines was aimed at mr 2tonenv as he seemed to be having probs with his lines not being bent correctly.

Here is a pic of the line all bent and installed that was in the install thread.
My thread is on a different site. http://www.ihadav8.com/forum/index.php?topic=4228.0 a link if you are interested
