Hello Guys. I need honest help!

My daughter was accepted with a scholarship attached, to attend Beloit College.

Problem is, Iv'e been doing some research, and to be quite honest, the town appears to be a real shit hole!!

I hate to sound like a snob, but there seems to be no real cultural center, college atmosphere, good food, things to do, or anything a young intellectual woman would be interested in. Further more, crime rate seems high, family incomes are low, more than 20 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

What's up with this place? Is it some mid-west I wanna-be a "make-believe gangsta" paradise? Or just some trailer trash crystal meth stop. Is it one of those towns that the seniors sit around talking about how good it used to be? All while they have watched there property values go to shit?

Please fill me in if I'm off track here. Because I'm beginning to get nervous. And when I get nervous, she stays home!

Beloit has one redeeming quality.... it's in Wis and not in Illinois
the towns south of there are the really sh!ty ones..... Machesney Park is a real dump!

there wouldn't be much of a college experience that's for sure.

Just one redeeming quality? Just one?!!!

Oh no. This isn't going to happen. Anyone else?

Madison would be the place for college atmosphere, not Beloit.

South Beloit is pretty solid.

Thanks guys. I'm going to continue to research all the towns of all the colleges she has been accepted into. And if she should seriously consider Beloit, then I guess I will have to make a weekend run out there to see for my self.

But keep the comments coming. This is something I can't have too much information about. I want to know everything. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Look into statistics on employment of their graduates. That tells the tale. Did you ever hear of Beloit College? I live in Illinois 3 hours south of it and I never heard of it. But then I'm a University of Illinois grad. My daughter went to Syracuse University, more in your neck of the woods, and it took her a few years to land a decent job.

From my coworker who lives in South Beloit...Right by the college is pretty decent and Lucy burger is awesome. Decent bars. Gets a little ugly when you cross the river.

He also says that people that go to UW schools usually love it.

We are still waiting on word from Syracuse! That would be one of my choices for her. But it's still a 4 hour drive from the NYC/lower Westchester area. She has been to Europe twice (Italy, France, and the UK) and was considering applying to schools in Europe. But the financial assistance that one can get going to a college in the US is not available for students who choose to attend colleges overseas.

Either way, we still have choices. Just waiting. But by mid April we should know everything.

Her Loving the whole college experience is extremely important to me because it would be so important to her doing well. I know her well enough to know that she won't be able to separate the school education part and the lifestyle part. She needs both.

Example....I can do my job with the same tenacity no matter where I work. In the armpit of Detroit, or the heart of Beverly Hills. I'm in construction, and once I'm on site, it doesn't matter where I am. It's always the same.

But not for her. She needs the whole atmosphere thing.

Whatever:rolleyes:.

What does she want to study? If unsure, she might be best off at a local JC for her first two years. Might be cheaper, too!

She is a bit of a foreign language wiz. So she is looking to combine this skill with Anthropology. Her mother and I can't seem to truly understand how exactly she will earn a living with this education. I can tell you all about the heated family debates we have had. But I'm sure you may be able to draw your own image.

The one thing I was able to promise was unconditional support for whatever she chooses.

I attended a local college. NY Tech. Problem was, It was like I never left high school. Lived at home, hung with the same gang, did the same things, went to the same places. I needed a change and didn't get one. I'm hoping more for her.

This sounds promising. Every little bit helps.

There is linguistic anthropology, whatever that is. Call the college and ask a counselor what her job prospects would be. Remember, Trump will be cutting funding for anything not related to defense. What if he gets re-elected in 4 years?
