I'm considering this GN. I have no pictures because I think that's creepy to go look at a car and photoshoot it. I would question it if happening to me.
Here's the details...
1987
180,000 miles...a daily driver for the owner.
Whole car needs paint (badly checked on every square inch) and a little rust removal...not much just a couple nickel sized spots. Everything else, frame, under doors, engine parts, wheels is negligible as I can deal with it.
New tranny, shifts fine.
Engine runs very well considering everything you don't want holes in has holes in it. Vacuum lines maf tube, etc. Car is completely unmolested unless you count the Monte SS tailpipe set up. Brand spanking new interior, floorboards intact.
He wants $7k....don't think that's a good number. There's interest in the SVO. I'm thinking about pitching a straight up trade as my car needs very little.

In my eyes and experience, that car needs a minimum of $5k in paint and body....$10k if I do it right. At least $2k in engine counting parts and my labor. I don't think this car is worth 3500. Which is my professional opinion. I am selling my car at a loss either way. I know Gbody's nut for bolt. I know how to turn my engine on in the Ferd.

I don't want to offend this man, as he is a straight up good guy.

Any thoughts?

Pitch it with him throwing in a g or two. You can always go to trading straight up. If he likes your whip he might just do it. Never know until you ask.

Rich, if I did it plus cash I'd be giving him money for nothing. I guess I'm looking at it as I'm buying or trading for a project. I dunno. Maybe that's the route to start with and work from there.

That's him adding cash to get you to take his project. I wouldn't be giving up my nice ride for a project straight up, even if you know you want it.

He knows his is a project. He knows yours is put the key on and run it. Sounds like to me he doesn't wrench, so him giving to sweeten the deal should make sense to him.

If you buy one that needs major work like a paint job you're going to end up working on it more than driving it. You know how these cars can balloon out of control when you start repairs. The big question here is if this is going to be your DD or are you planning on something else when you do the repairs?
 
I should have kept my mouth closed when I was there. Luckily he didn't have a own and paper handy. I listed off every little thing wrong and the fix as I was going over the car. He wrenches, this was legitimately his every day car. Oil, gas, and a clean interior all the time for the most part. He did appreciate the reliability of the car. He's only had it for 5 years and most of the project now, was a project when he bought it.

It may have been beaten in its younger years. It has air shocks in the rear with remote valving under the fenders behind the rear wheels.

It's a project I want....but I don't want to take that big a hit.....know what I mean?

It's 180K on the clock and even though it's been taken care of there's going to be a lot more work than I think you expect. Are you trying to build what you had last time or something a little more wifey friendly.;)

I am trying to emulate my last build. That motor will go 300k plus if it isn't pushed by the new owner to 9 seconds. :)

Very well aware. Three different worlds. There's the TR, the mudstains, and then the SVO....which has almost nothing in common with the mudstain.


Edit... And the difference is he's been looking for an SVO.

Keep in mind that when someone fixes up a car and sells it, they're lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar for stuff they did. The paint job is the most expensive thing on a Turbo Buick. I nice one should be about 5 to 8 K. I say, find some sucker who dumped a ton of cash to make the car nice, then pay him 50 cents on the dollar.;)

Save your money and don't be that sucker, or you'll be hearing about it on T6P.:eek:
