Take a look at this email. Im thinking scam but not sure how it works. This guy wants to buy a piece of surveying equipment I have. If he deposits money in my paypal account is there any way the funds could be returned/refunded?

I really appreciate your respond,I am an oceanographer and am currently at sea at the moment, due to my occupation as a marine engineer at this moment i am presently working offshore, sometimes access to regular emails and phone calls are very poor in offshore due to inefficiency of the immarsat service, I located in pacific WA, and i want you to know that am okay with the APL1A status and also the conditions of the APL1A and the asking price as well, I am buying the APL1A as a gift for my Dad as a surprise for him,he wont know anything about the APL1A until they get delivered to him, i can only pay through PayPal as i don't have access to my bank account on-line as i don't have internet banking, but i have my bank account attached to my PayPal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through PayPal, kindly get back to me with your PayPal details if you don't have PayPal account yet,it is very easy to set up at your bank and get it set up,after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through so i can proceed with the payment and after the payment has been done, i have a pick up agent that will come around for verifications and to pick the APL1A after i have made the payments for the APL1A.So I will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the making of the payment.

1.Your PayPal full name.
2.Your PayPal Email Address.
3..Your phone number.

Once again ,I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping. I will have my pick-up agent come over as soon as you have receive the payment confirmation.

The entire email sounds bogus to me, but this last part is actually disturbing?

A marine engineer, and most other honest people, would most likely NOT send an "agent", but would have you ship the item. Shipping documents the transaction. A "agent" would make it easy to dispute the delivery.

I would not sell anything in this manner unless the agent paid in CASH! :) [And even that I would check to be sure it was real!]

Send that email to PayPal, see what kind of response you get...I am guessing that they tell you to run.

Sounds a little funny to me. Send it to paypal and see what they say. Let me save you the time. They are going to tell you not to do the transaction

It certainly sounds fishy to me, especially the wording. I would advise against the transaction.

That aside, I wonder if there would be a way to handle a legitimate transaction securely in this manner.

There are escrow services that work thru ebay that will middle something like this, how portable is it?

Bob

Same wordy, broken english jibberish that I have seen on those "to good to be true" craigslist ads. Looks like a scam to me.

Had someone tex me the other day wanting to buy my iPhone off me and then send me an email about how they are currently overseas and to ship the iPhone to their friends son for his birthday. Their friends son was located in Africa. They offered to pay with PayPal and offered me $230 more than I was asking. They have since not been replied to.

Who buys their Dad one of those? Who explains paypal like you are a caveman?
Small portable and expensive- excellent target for thieves.

I had 2 people try this when I put a truck on craigs list. Same BS and the add said pick it up in person. The guy persisted so I know it's a big scam. Walk away and be happy you did.:)

Find out his address through Pay pal and send him a bag of sheet.

Just dont do it man. Wait for the next buyer.. That sounds to much like bs.. I got almost the same email while trying to sell my chevelle on craiglist. I would respond cash in hand only n never hear back from them..

Damn straight!

Craigslist is flush with this stuff. Seller beware! This is just the flip side of the absentee seller scheme. In that the seller in complicated circumstances is maybe a service person overseas or shipping out (or maybe is supposedly the out of state mother/widow of such person) in need of a quick deal and a money transfer to seal it.

Don't waste any more time on this dirtbag.

I say you waste a LOT more time and money...

Send him a response that you are OK with it...but are afraid of all the scams you have heard about and would like proof they are a real person, if they could please send you a picture holding a sign with the words 'I am we tar did' then you could feel safe..

Then just try and keep it going as long as possible!! :)
