I need to get the trans rebuilt in my 85 (hotair). Its been slipping on the 1-2 shift at anything over moderate throttle, and is getting slowly worse. Also, the TC clutch lockup has been acting up, cycling on and off frequently at around 40-50 mph under medium throttle.
The car is pretty stock, most of the work i've done was for reliability more than anything else, and its my daily driver (60+ miles a day). I take it to the track maybe 2-3 times a year, and while I have an intercooler kit I have been meaning to put in for a year or so now, even if/when I do I don't plan on getting crazy with the boost or power levels. Again, mainly a fun daily driver car.
As such, I assume I don't need to go crazy with beefing up or modifying the trans when I get it rebuilt. I'm on a tight budget (both a college graduate student and a government employee, not exactly rolling in wealth) so I was hoping a stock-spec rebuild would be adequate. What do you guys think?
Lastly, can anyone reccomend a good trans shop in the Tampa Bay area (preferrably St. Pete) that wont rip me off? I don't know much about how unique the trannies in our cars are; do I need to go a shop that is specifically knowledgeable on these trannies? Or for the level of work I'm looking for (stock-type rebuild), will any decent reputable trans shop be able to handle it? I just want to do this once, and do it as cheaply as possible, any reccomendations you guys have as far as shops to use would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
