USGS Release: 3 to 4.3 Billion Barrels of Technically Recoverable Oil Assessed in North Dakota and Montana’s Bakken Formation—25 Times More Than 1995 Estimate— (4/10/2008 2:25:36 PM)

The U.S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oilmen knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana ... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion. 'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.' says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years,' reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada. For years, U.S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological break through ha s opened up the Bakken's massive reserves... and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL! That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years straight.
And if that didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one should - because it's from TWO YEARS AGO, people!

U.S. Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World! Stanberry Report Online - 4/20/2006 Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth.
Here are the official estimates:
-8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
-18-times as much oil as Iraq
-21-times as much oil as Kuwait-22-times as much oil as Iran
-500-times as much oil as Yemen- and it's all right here in the Western United States.

Why are we not extracting because the democrats, environmentalists and left wing republicans have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil.
James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels. Untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.
Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to.

Upset yet?

Mikey

Great news, it's staggering though how much oil we actually use if in only 41 years it would be gone.

I still think the government really doesn't want to say why they don't go after it, because draining everyone else's pool leads to us being the main supplier decades from now. Of course, that puts us in a more powerful world position concerning energy.

3 to 4.3 Billion does NOT equal 503 Billion.

The 503 and the 2 Trillion in the article are in the form of oil shale and not oil and it DEFINITELY NOT "Light sweet crude".

Think of it as rocks that burn and getting oil out of it is a $120 - $150/bbl prospect (Not $16/bbl  )

Like ungn said, I'm sure most of this is in the form of oil shale. We already knew about big deposits of the stuff, it's nice to know there is more, but it all comes down to economics. With oil at less than $60/bbl this stuff can't compete. Over $100/bbl it probably can but that means gas prices back at $2.50/gal or whatever. Besides, one thing I haven't seen anyone mention anywhere is the fact that I like the idea of burning up the Middle East's oil now while it is fairly cheap, while sitting on our reserves. Run them out first, then we will have the monopoly and they can go pound sand :).

A lot of people have sent me the snopes article about the oil but it really doesn't say the original article is false. As far as shale oil that only cost $5.00-10.00/barrel more to get it out. Not really a big deal considering it only cost $10.00/barrel to get oil out of the ground of a normal well.

Besides with oil currently at $50.00/barrel now OPEC and the oil companies would just drop the price of foreign crude to the point where we could not afford to drill here anyway.

Please post one reputable scientific or corporate web site that says "shale oil that only cost $5.00-10.00/barrel more to get it out" because that is crazy talk.

We currently get ZERO oil from shale. Don't you think if was only $5.00 to $10.00 more we'd and least be getting 1 or 2 bbls of oil from shale? (Not one or two Millions or Billions barrels, just one or two)

That truly has to be best explanation ive heard in awhile, your damn right we need to use everyone elses resources until they dry up, then tap ours.
Sad thing is, id hate to see what our country would become when we start producing like the other countries do. Ive heard horror stories from friends what its like...
I think the road here is what we would be in 500 years , saturated in oil
YouTube - funny bicycle donuts

I can hear the Rick James song "Can't touch this!" The Envro wackos won't allow it!

I wish there were ways to prove what I said. The only reason I know what it costs is because I have a close friend who is a contractor that is involved with it. In fact he logs in on this board every once in a while and owns a couple of GN's. For what ever reason they keep it all hush, hush. You get to believe whatever you want this is after all America and I will always support your right to believe whatever you want. But do you really believe the energy companies will let anyone know what is going on with them? Do people really believe OPEC is in charge of controlling oil? They are puppets of the energy companies. I wish our leaders could keep secrets like they do.

OIL IN N. DAKOTA!!!!!

Dont let George know, he might try to start a war in N. Dakota and Montana!!!!!

Unlike Governments, energy companies will always do what will result in the most money in their pocket. If Oil is selling for over $40/bbl and coal and mining companies aren't all over oil shale by now, you have to figure that oil shale refining cost + profit margin is > $40 / bbl.

Oil companies (and other energy companies) are pursuing Oil shale, only because the price of Oil went over $60/bbl. Before that, they had zero interest in it and made no attempt to overturn the ban on shale development in the richest shale deposits.

And Energy companies don't "control" the price of oil... Demand does.

If Oil companies could control the price of oil, it would still be $140/bbl and not $60 bbl.

Don't let the Democrats know. They'll declare North Dakota a "pristine wilderness" and ban drilling, without ever mentioning that the state tree of North Dakota is the "telephone pole".
