i have a 8.5 in my rear and i think it is a limited slip or open and I want to change it to a full posi so what will i need another carrier unit?

If you raise both your rear tires, and roll one, does the other roll the same way? If so, it's posi. If not it's open.

not always- a worn posi acts just like an open diff.. the only way to know for sure what you've got is to pop the cover and take a look.

Hey John, If you had the car in park and did as you described the wheels would not rotate at all. The only way you test will work is if the car is in neutral.

so what will it take to turn into a full posi without welding it . jus kiddin about;) the welding part.

who makes the best unit auburn or eaton ........ i'm looking at a eaton g80 locker with a 3.42 gear what do ya think?

I just had an Auburn Tru-Trac put in mine. Also had ford ends welded on to eliminate the c-clips. Drive Train Specialist in Ionia, Michigan is who I had do the work. You might call them to get their opinion.

Stay away from the Auburns, they use tapered metal cones instead of clutch discs like the Eaton. Auburns are not rebuildable, as they wear they fill the case with metal and the metal wears everything else, Gears, Bearings etc.. Auburn does have a Tradein Remann deal but, it's not for the older Auburns.

If the G80 Locker is a Gov-Lock "Grenade-Lock" it's very weak and should also be avoided.

With the Open Diff "Peg Legger" you can install a PowerTrax Locker. They're a little noisy in tight turns when it ratchets. Work well tho'.

The Eaton Posi, Yukon DuraGrip Posi, Eaton/Detroit-TrueTrac, Eaton/Detroit-Locker are all good Diffs.

The stock GM Traction Locks Diffs are good if they're in good shape. The Spider Gears & Clutches are no longer available to rebuild them tho'. :(

Eaton makes the TrueTrac, not Auburn.
