New Motor Build Question - Stroker (Flat tapper) or Stock Stroke (Roller)?

Many stock cranks, which are pushing 30 years old, have been abused over the years - detonation causing the caps to dance and an already brittle crank to endure stress. If/when the crank splits in two it can take out other components including the block. A girdle will not turn back time and...

    Odd crank machining twice now

The depth of rolled radii in the cast crankshafts is not consistently even with the rod journals - suggesting the rolled radii was present in its finished state prior to the rod journals being indexed and finish ground. As others have suggested, offset grinding when there is only .010 of...

(Cam) Lobe Woes (with New Motor)

I don't recall seeing how the cam was broke in, and definitely an important question to ask. There's a reason why we only sell roller cams, and avoiding the problems with an improper break-in being high on the list.

oil pan gasket and rear main seal

Assuming 20 bolt stock oil pan: Fel-Pro OS30521R (Rubber Pan Gasket) Fel-Pro BS40613 (Rear Main Seal) We don't like rubber pan gaskets and use cork or Cometic AF pan gaskets on our builds. No local auto parts stores I know of carry cork pan gaskets these days.

    Chicagoland engine builder

He would not be doing a "total restoration" without at least going through the engine and getting it out of the way to clean/detail/paint the engine compartment. And with 100K miles on it, I bet every one of those stock pistons are cracked. It's a good time to address those issues now, rather...

Good or junk -- Timing Covers which one to use????

I'm assuming that you possibly purchased an un-assembled GM front cover from us years ago because we never have sold ported/fully assembled new front covers with HV booster plates as seen in image 20151009_201455-jpg and rope seals as seen in image 20151009_201642-jpg. If this is not the case...

    Forged standard set up

We sold so many standard pistons for NOS 109 blocks that we have our own part number. But any vendor that sells pistons should be able to help. It's a simple change order...

    Which forged piston?

Stock or stroker? Diamond has made numerous revisions to their stock stroke shelf pistons over the years. Diamond stroker pistons are all custom and will vary in design from one vendor to the other. For example, our in stock short rod stroker pistons come in at 8.9:1 compression though we've...

    Diamond Piston Questions on weight

Our +.020 Diamond stroker pistons weigh 522G and use a .940D/.155W wrist pin that weighs 134G. We have +.030 and +.040 in stock as well, designed for use with Molnar 5.960 rods, if you need them. Keep in mind with a stroker crank you may need to clearance the block and your existing connecting rods.

Is this what crank twist does to the mains? (update)

Agreed. Cast cranks are brittle and don't like to twist or bend - they often simply crack. If the detonation were to have continued, then a two piece crank or cracked block may have followed.

Having engine work done for the 1st time.

If the guy working on your engine does not know how hard it is to upgrade to a roller, what else does he not know? I'm not trying to be mean, but these engines are unique. I've seen many come in for rebuilds shortly after someone else rebuilt them. Seeing internal carnage is not a good sight nor...

Having engine work done for the 1st time.

You need to toss the 100 lber valve springs and put roller springs on. Maybe that's why the guy doing the work is getting cold feet or is he unfamiliar with performance upgrades to these engines? You can get by with the stock rockers using holddowns on the shafts. Though roller rockers with...

    Is crank bad?

A .030 under cast crankshaft and a 700HP target is a recipe for disaster. Do it right the first time and spend less in the long run.

    Wide VS narrow rod bearings

The rolled radius will vary from one journal to the next, but the bearing surface is approximately .675-.700 wide on the stock cranks I've looked at. A wide journal bearing comes in at .735 wide, leaving an overhang of .035 - .060. Hope that gives you some numbers to work with Mike.

    Snout issue

Though it can be welded, I agree with Nick. The minute heat from the weld is introduced to the crank, it will likely bend and the crank would require straightening. The cost of the weld, grinding the snout back down and straightening the crank would likely exceed the cost of replacing the it...

    Tom at champion heads

I spoke with Tom yesterday evening. He's a busy man and could use a few clones of himself (couldn't we all), but he is still getting a lot of work done. A month or longer is not an abnormal amount of time to be waiting for a repair. A lot of times setups have to be tore down to perform repairs...

What's the differents between scat H beam rods K1 rods and gn1 rods ?

I think most would agree that K1 and Molnar rods are among the best H Beam 4340 forged rods out there. Both use a 7/16 ARP 2000 fastener, whereas Eagle uses a 3/8 ARP 2000 fastener. Unless upgraded fasteners are used, Scat uses 7/16 ARP 8740 fasteners that hold up well beyond their 900 HP...

    summitt rebuild kits

It's a good pin for many builds IMO, but this is relative to how much HP you intend to produce. We've seen low/mild carbon 1016, 1018 and even 5115 pins crack. Once the crack starts in a low/mild carbon case hardened pin, it's all downhill from there. Bad tune/detonation, improperly matched...
