Re-sealing and freshening up the motor

For the oil pump I’d suggest a TA performance front cover assembly. Their high performance unit provides excellent oil pressure. Changing flat tappet cams is very risky. Usually results in a wiped out lobe. Going to a roller cam is common due to this risk. But that’s a can of worms in...

    Cylinder 5 is dead

Wouldn't a wiped cam cause a lot of other issues?

    Cylinder 5 is dead

I had all the same symptoms you have, car ran and idled fine, missed under load. I bought injectors and injector harness, changed coil and module. I had great compression and everything looked great under the valve cover. Nothing broken or loose. #5 cylinder had a wiped cam lobe!

    Cylinder 5 is dead

Wonderful, it looks like this may be getting parked for quite a while. Are the #5 cam lobes a known problem with the GN's?

    Cylinder 5 is dead

Yes, it is a stock engine with about 107,000 miles on it. The engine has to be pulled out just to change the cam?

    Cylinder 5 is dead

Usually its cylinder #3. Pull the valve cover and start it. You will know right away if you have a wiped lobe. One of the rockers will barely move compared to the others. I f does not move might as well pull the engine.. Put a vacuum gauge on it? Is this engine stock? Flat tappet cam?

    SLIC or stock with Duttneck

That's going to really hurt you if they are weak. Pull the springs off and test them Put the new ones on. I have run 100lb springs on the stock cam Into the 10s. There can be other things but that's a big one You could also have a wiped lobe too. Check that too.

What lifter for flat tappet cam?

Cam lobes are still good, I found no shavings or metal in the pan since changing the oil 2 times after overheating. If a cam lobe was wiped I would have been seen in the pan, I drove with the noise for 20miles home?? At this point I'm going to do lifters instead of pulling the motor out and...

    Impulsive 3.8 swap.

Lost data in this thread: KB 1xb cam had a wiped lobe. I replaced it with a different Elgin cam and had to pull the heads while the swap happened for guide shortening and seals. Learned that it has hyper pistons in it with more compression. Then more time passes and this machine was stolen and...

    Engine guys please help!

Thanks for all the great input. Let me back up a minute. This motor ran great back in 21, with all these same parts, idled great, clean plugs, crisp starts, great power (side note, we degreed the cam when we put it together this first time with help of a seasoned guy)....but I somehow must have...

Guess the sound win a beer, story time...

Sooooo, went driving to the local exhaust shop installed dual 3" with flowmaster 10's, no cat. Sounds GREAT! Problem....on the way home lower rad hose came off, didn't notice until it was too late, white smoke everywhere. Water temp gauge showed good 180-185 so I never looked in the rear view...

Guess the sound win a beer, story time...

First off thank you for your input Chuck, this is ALL new to me! My guess about the white smoke I saw before pulling over to the shoulder was because the lower rad hose literally came off and all my coolant poured out 'at speed' and hit my headers n exhaust. One reason I don't think head...

    Crusty Grand National Revival

Crusty Grand National Revival Several years ago, I had a customer bring this 87 Grand National to me to inspect. Shortly afterwards, his cam went flat. It wiped out one of the lobes. I sold several engine parts to him, including a 212/212 Comp Cam/lifters and spring kit. Long story short, he...

    Buick 3.8 poor performance

What springs did you use in the heads? How does it idle? Any reason to think the cam got wiped. What oil used?

    Replacing the timing belt ?

You will need a cam sensor tool, plastic feeler gauges for setting the crank position sensor, you will also have to decide if you're going to keep the plastic chain tensioner ( probably not), maybe replace your "s" hose while you're at it. My turbo housing was clocked on it rubbing a hole in...

Tear Down the 109, Questions Advise

Hi Everyone, since I'm not going anywhere for awhile, though I'd tear down the motor that came with my WE4 I purchased in September. I received the car (former drag car) with the engine installed, heads bolted down, front cover on and just about everything else in the trunk I opened it up...

This thing smokes under full boost only

I had a used .030 over engine in the car. The third time it cracked a cylinder all the way to the top of the block, I had to scrap the block. The engine in the car in the vid was the original std bore block. It was pulled originally cuz the original cam eventually wiped. We pulled it apart, and...
