Upgraded Factory Radio Users

Just got this. Love it so far.

Tried upgrading stock radio, but is sounded like shit.

Had a modern radio that sounded good, but looked like shit.

Retrosound radio, Newport model.

Shop around for price. I paid $309 with free shipping

Its pricey but I have built a few other cars and added the retrosound brand stereos. I liked the other 2. Thanks

Apart from the factory radio having no AUX, isn't the biggest downfall those crappy paper 4x10's in the rear?

Thought I read way back some guy just upgraded the rears speakers and the system sounded a lot better.

Also does anyone know if those Retrosound units are plug n play.........or do you have to go in there with a machete?

Plug and play. 100%.

The other downfall of factory units is the lack of a decent internal amplifier.

My 4x10s were disintegrated. I put cheap 6x9s in with the adapter and the radio sounds pretty good. Its' not great but respectable, I can still hear it with windows down. I don't have concert sound though.

The money you spend on that aftermarket radio is stupid. Nothing looks good imo other than stock. For a couple hundred more you can get a power box from JL Audio a couple mids and tweeters. Run a stock radio hook up and auxiliary for the amp and listen to a music app on your phone. Radio is there for looks only really. It will sound 100 times better than that radio.

Looks good. Unless I'm mistaken, it appears like the new electronics protective plastic film is still on the area where the digital display is. Is it still there? Will look nicer when removed but I also know some folks like to keep it on forever.

I just had someone show me that the factory plastic film was still on the plastic plate that surrounds the headlight switch. I never noticed it. Took it off and it's like new after 30 years. I wish the whole car was still wrapped in plastic. Lol.

Another satisfied customer of Tony.. He repaired my stock radio because of burned out outputs. My two front speakers and one side speaker did not work. While he repaired the outputs he also fixed my cassette deck and gave my radio a tune up withou me even asking him. The work and turn around time was awesome. Shipped my radio on Tuesday had it in hand the folllowing Wednesday. Just in time for my car show. Tony had installed my aux cable many moons ago. Stand up guy and great and easy to deal with. hIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

Ok guys. I recently upgraded all 6 of my speakers with the set gary sells from car runs. Awesome service and great tech support. Also had my radio upgraded with the six cable. I was very happy well until I got into a buddies GN that had a nice sound system. I should have never gotten into it. He had a aftermarket radio and amps and well the whole nine yards. I am not an audiophile by any means and was very happy what I have. DAM I should have never gotten into that car. Anyway now I want a better sound system but do not want to change my stick look. So been reading this post about the Zarco preamp looked on flea bay and they are 400 bucks. Is that the one you guys are speaking of? Anyway I was looking at this woofer and amp in the pic attached. So I was Honking of putting it in the trunk. How would I wore it using my stock radio? What components would I use and does anyone have a rough wiring diagram? Any help would be appreciated. So want to keep my stock look but a little umph in the sounds. Want everyone around me to hear NPR. Lol

Oops here is the speaker/ amp system I would like to install without any major wiring changes to my stock look. Do I need TVs jack?

If you are looking just to add bass, the subwoofer will do that. Adding the 1000 watt (grin) amp will require a dedicated 4 Gage or lower fused power wire from the battery to handle the 30 plus amps it will draw. if your going to do it plan it out with someone who knows what they are doing to save yourself some aggravation. and yes , you will need some kind of line level adapter to use an amp with rca pre amp inputs. you could always find an old Punch out there that has line level inputs as an alternative, and parallel them off the rear speaker wires.
