Extender G chip with Gen2, question on TCC lock up for 4th gear

Will post here in hopes the Bob or somebody with some first hand experience knows the answer.

Does anyone know if the Extender-G chip requires the 4th gear indicator signal form the transmission in order to lock the TCC at the programmed mph?
I have the chip selection set to lock at 45mph, but it is not locking now after getting a new Lonnie Diers trans, my engine builder told me the Lonnie does not put the electronic switch back in most of the time that sends the 4th gear signal to the ECM.
So wonderign if the chip requires this signal in order to lock the TCC.
I am not seeing the 4th gear indicator on Direct Scan light up either. I can manually lock the TCC using a switch on the ALDL and it locks up then just fine.

Yes it needs that signal.

Thanks Dave, I can't be the only one that has come across this, wonder if Bob makes an Ext-G that would not require it? My builder really hates to but the part back in that would generate the signal something about it being plastic and had a tendency to break loose and cause issues....alternative would be to go to a non-lockup convertor.

I'm not aware of any issue with either of the pressure switches breaking off. Never heard that one before.

I will look into it, but it may be easier to just ground the 3rd and 4th switch wires.

Bob
Any ill effects of doing that with the chip? It wouldn't make the convertor lock before it hits 4th gear or something like that would it?

its still MPH controlled. You won't hurt anything by trying it.

Bob

Ya, you could use a manual lockup switch. Of course then you have to remember to unlock it when appropriate also.

Let me try grounding the 3rd and 4th switch wires and see how it behaves, I need to put it up on the lift and swap out the pass motor mount, so I will do that then and post back.
I have a manual switch, been using it on the highway, but I always forget to unlock it, thats a pain.
Thank you both for the help!

So I ran a jumper wire connecting the 3rd gear (green/white) to the 4th gear ind wire (light blue), shouldn't that make both 3rd and 4th indicators be "on" when 3rd gets switched "on" ?? It doesn't, the Direct Scan now doesn't even show the 3rd gear indicator lit now. It shifts to 3rd and 4th fine, but still no TCC lockup unless I flip the manual switch :(

Should they both be ran to ground?

so, was your 3rd switch working before (I guess I missed that).

I just did a little checking, and it appears that a ground turns off that input on the ECM, so the 4th gear wire inside the trans is probably grounded.

So you want to unhook the 4th wire from the trans and see if that helps.

Hi Bob,
Yes, the 3rd gear indicator was lighting up before on my Direct Scan.
So that would makes sense, if the 4th gear is grounded, and now I grounded them both by hooking them together.
I will un-do the jumper wire and see If I can't pull the 4th gear light blue wire out of the harness connector one night this week.

Thanks!

What is the trick to getting the male pins out of the connector harness? I cannot see a release tab to push in with a thin wire/paper clip in order to pull the pin out of the connector??
I do not want to just cut the wire for the 4th gear indicator.

On the 4 wire connector at the transmission....after seeing a pic of the extractor tool, I took a coffee stir straw and slit the side of it...slipped it over the pin and pushed it all the way down, and whaala...pin pulled right out for the 4th gear ind wire!
So I have it now covered with heat shrink and zipped tied out of the way.....cut off the end of a pencil eraser and it fits perfectly in the hole left in the plug with the vacant wire now to seal it up.
Will try to take it for a spin tomorrow or Friday evening, its late and at the back of the garage currently, don't want to move all the cars around now...will post back after driving around.

Well that seems to work better... The 3rd gear indicator never lights now, but 4th is always on... This causes the convertor to lock when accellerating to get on the highway in 3rd gear before the 4th gear shift...when it does shift to 4th it is rather harsh. That was with the TCC lockup set at 45 mph. Set at 50 it shifts at almost the same time, so it is set to 55 now, guess it will never lock unless on the highway now., but it does seem to lug easier with this new motor compared to the stock one...stock motor could handle it locked at 45 mph fine cruising.
Will play with it some more, but kind of puzzled why the 3rd gear indicator will not come on now.

odd, like the 3rd switch is grounded all the time now. time for more diagnosis.....

Overall, it drives ok now with the lockup set at 55mph. Doesn't seem to have any ill effects of the 4th gear indicator "on" all the time, and the 3rd gear ind always "off".
Will drive it like this for now, but will probably have my builder throw the switch back in next time I have the car back over, he already offered to put the switch in.
