Diet Bumpers

Damn these things are heavy ! I know there are fiberglass bumpers, but aside from that, is there a way to put these beasts on a diet ? They must weigh 50-60lbs each.
Anyone ever cut the center section out?

Yes I can dig up some pictures i have . I cut the whole center out and left the brackets that bolt it to the frame

It is the steel supports that weigh so much. Can swap them for aluminum ones to shave a lot of weight.

Thanks guys,.....that's what i was hoping to hear. Figured by taking out some of the center section it would still work fine.

There are also short brkts made for export cars.

Here's what I did on mine… I "emptied" the front bumper be removing the reinforcement piece and cut off only two small sections from the reinforcement onto which the bumper brackets bolt to.

There was a guy selling the Canadian export supports for $200 and I simply made my own also. Then you can mount it to the aluminum supports to save a few more lbs.

Funny you say this about "Canadian export" cars… I live in Canada and bought my Canadian GN brand new in '87 and the bumper supports do not seem any different that the ones on US cars…

That's what i did for the front and rear bumpers. I also bought the aluminum bumper support mounting brackets from Kirban performance to remove a few more
pounds. You know every little bit helps when you are on a diet.lol

You can also use the aluminum bumper shocks to save some weight.

Im curious, do you need to use the heavy support with the fiberglass bumpers? Also where is the best place to get both fiberglass bumpers, im ripping car apart for paint job and thinking of replacing steel with fiberglass.

Since we are talking bumpers/bumper shocks, is there a spec. to measure if your bumper shocks have been collapsed ? With my bumpers attached, they almost touch my SpoolFool fillers. When the frame flexes going thru a driveway, the bumper will actually touch the filler. I was thinking my shocks were pushed in a little bit.

I have an original ATR glass front bumper...and it bolts directly to the shocks.

Thanks scooby,thats what i thought. Got an idea where to buy them both new. Ive seen a few venders selling them,just curious what everybody likes the best.

How old are your body mounts? Could be them flexing

About 6 months. I just did them.

It's not from extreme frame flex. The bumpers are too close to the fillers. We are talking 1/8"

There are shims that go between the bumper shocks and bumper reinforcements to move the bumper further away from body if needed.

It's too close top and bottom. It needs to go backward. I planned on shimming as needed if i couldn't prove that my shocks were pushed in some.
