Radio issue

I tried the audio section but did not get any replies. So I'll try here. Started my car and the power antenna did not go up. The clock in the radio works but nothing else. No noise or sound of any kind. If the antenna is bad, wouldn't the radio still produce static? The fuse is good. Thoughts?

Check the radio fuse. Clock is powered by a different fuse, courtesy fuse if I remember correctly. Might be a that or the radio just died.

Yeah I'm thinking it's the radio. Fuses are all good and relay checked good (I replaced it anyway). I guess the question now is,if, the radio died would that render the power antenna inoperable. I think it would. On the other hand if the antenna motor died would that prevent the radio from working. Don't think it would. Do we agree?

Could just be the power switch in the radio. Does your radio have an equalizer?

there is a pink wire that comes out of the back of the radio (in the power harness) that produces 12 volts when the radio turns on. this goes to the relay and operates the antenna. if the radio is not turning on then probably is not generating the output that drives the relay for the antenna. try measuring for 12 volts on that pink wire. also if you wanted to try and troubleshoot that antenna, i believe there is a section in the service manual that jumpers the wires in the relay and powers up or down the antenna. I can find them if you need them.

If the clock display comes on but the radio display does not when you power it up that means you have power to both switched and un-switched inputs. If there is no power going to the radio electronics or the power antenna that means the most likely cause is the power switch on the radio. I have replaced a few of those switches in my day for this very issue.

Thanks zapp. I will check that wire out tomorrow.

Your problem is the power switch on the radio. Equalizer radios use a different switch than the standard radios and for some reason they have a higher failure rate. Not sure why.

I agree with mike, troubleshooting the power antenna wont hurt but will not fix turning your radio on. that power switch would be the first place to look.

What is difficulty factor replacing the switch. Better left to some one with proper know how and tools?

I am sure just some soldering skills, easy for me to say, I am an electronics tech. finding the part number on the switch and if it is still available will be your biggest challenge. sounds like Mike has done the job before, he may be able to help

MIKE!!!!!!!MIKE!!!!!!!MIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not too difficult to change if you have a little know how. The radio does have to be torn down a little ways to get at it. I could fix it for you but I'm sure the shipping cost would be prohibitive. I do have some spare switches laying around.
