Seriously blown turbo

So I disconnected the tb from the turbo to prep for the ta33c that's going in. I knew the turbo was blown, hence the reason I am doing this mild upgrade. But DAMN! I need to drop the pan and check for pieces. Wow.

How'd it do that?

Hell if I know. I'm the third owner. It had a major oil leak when I got it. The prior owner had just had the timing chain replaced and the hack mechanic used the wrong length bolt in the oil pump to timing cover. Anyways I kept the oil topped off, and gathered what I needed to repair, and then one day BIG cloud of white smoke. Tested, no smoke from the o2 port, so tell tale sign of blown turbo. She's getting a nice replacement though. And a full refresh, any further and I'd be doing a full rebuild.

Looks like something got in there

Yea I know. But there is so much play in the shaft side to side and in and out I wouldn't be surprised if it shaved itself. I have to drop the pan and pray I don't see a bloody metal mess.

Worried, not in my opinion. However I would pull the intake and do a damn good cleaning and see what you find

Intake and heads are off. Everything looks good. Same hack did a half ass on the oil pan gasket, cutting the old one and then just silicone where it meets the timing cover so that's dropping today. I will update what I find.

I had a similar problem with my hot air. I had the TR Custom cold air kit with the KN filter by the ground. I did not follow instructions and use hairspray to attach the KN filter. The KN filter fell off without me knowing and the intake sucked up street gravel. It damaged the turbine blades and the turbine pieces nicked up the valves. The engine still ran just fine.

Yea the pistons, valves, pushrods, lifters are all a ok. I am not too terribly worried. If I had more money I would pull the engine, tank it, etc. Just not in the budget. As it is the little things are adding up, like 30 year old tubing, tools I didn't have, lots and lots of brake clean lol.

So in the pics you can see there doesn't seem to be any visible damage. I haven't gotten under her to drop the pan yet, not a job I'm looking forward to. I believe I dodged the bullet but we shall see. Thanks for all your help and support on the board guys.

Did it have one of those conical air filters ( like in the above pic ,I forget the brand name ) that has a disc glued to the inside that comes loose and destroys turbo's and superchargers ?

A search will show the type i'm talking about.
Nope. Bone stock. It's pretty much been determined the input shaft nut came loose and grenaded the turbo.
