Sure interested in additional ideas, as simple sealing of the oil pan fixed the burning. I never saw vacuum conditions on the crankcase while idling. I'd also note that the action of the PCV assures that pressure doesn't build up in the crankcase. The crankcase is experiencing pressure pulses...
explanation
I don't have a physics explanation. Several mechanics that thought it was a leaking intake said that anytime a crankcase is under vacuum, that an engine will burn oil. You could feel suction (vacuum) on mine by placing a hand over the valve cover opening. My oil burning went away...
Issue Solved!
Turns out it was a very badly installed oil pan gasket! Leaked so bad that allowed air to be sucked into the crankcase, causing oil burning out the exhaust. Amazing. Bad, bad mechanic. thanks all.
intake leak
Mechanic said it sounds like an intake manifold leak, to check this by plugging off the PCV and checking for vacuum conditions at the dipstick pipe. Will do this tonite. Also said that the high-temp RTV was the wrong stuff to use on the intake, that some "super seal" or special...
Having same blowby (blue smoke) condition after installing new short block. Its strong enough to deeply annoy anyone following behind when I'm under load-starting out or going up a hill. I've got breathers on both valve covers. My data says I'm not running rich all the time (would cause "washing...
I bought some high flow used heads. In order to cleand them up I pulled the valve out. It felt bad coming out, seemed like small pieces of brass shavings came along with it. I replaced the seal, installed the heads. Have run for 5K miles struggling with oil loss and dirty oil. Compression checks...
My ECM recorded a Code 42 error. Tlink reference
states that the under EST condition, the ECM applies
5V to the Bypass line and expects voltage variations
on the EST line. My Helm's manual states the EST line
should show <1V while idling.
I monitored the Bypass line, saw 4.65 V steady...
I was also seeing intermittent "burps" on Turbolink (~1 per 25 frames) that indicated low battery (down to 0 volts). Couldn't catch it (verify it) with a DVM, so I installed WinALDL which uses the COM port (and a different cable) instead of the parallel port used by Turbolink. Still get the same...
0.42 TPS, I had IAC as low as 15 with low fuel pressure (25psi), but I when I adjusted the fuel pressure back up to 35 psi to avoid stalling, IAC went up to 50.
Injectors are 009s. Chip was Joe Lubrant's emissions chip. Joe has cut me several chips for these injectors, mostly to try to make it run leaner. Car was warm, in closed loop (10 mile drive). At the end of the test I was seeing 200F. This run the fuel pressure was 35psi. When I've tried to run...
Gettin closer but no tamale! After failing the IM240 test 4 times previously (extremely high HC and CO), I've managed to pass HC but still quite high on CO. So far I've:
-Swapped high temp thermostat back in, running 190F.
-installed an emissions chip
-used CRC emissions additive to fuel...
Looking for feedback on 02 readings. I get periodic (every 10 or so frames) 02 readings that are very low, e.g. < 10mv. The rest of the time the readings are normal, 300-800mv. Is this normal? BTW, I've tried numerous Bosch 02 sensors (which were very inactive), and now have a GM sensor (much...
