New here and to GN's

Hi all,

Grand Nationals are one of my top 5 to-own cars, I've had an affinity for them ever since I learned about them. I've been lurking for a while, signed up a couple weeks ago. I'm not new to cars, especially modifying. I have a fox body mustang making a hair north of 660whp, supercharged, meth injected stroker.

I recently acquired this '87 GN in decent condition. 139k miles, astro roof, straight body, 99% stock. It's been repainted at some point and has a couple of poorly prepped spots. New seat foam and covers, driver's side recline is messed up, only sits in one position but all the power controls work.

First thing it needs is a lot of cleaning (inside and out) because it's been doing a lot of sitting. I'm about finished with trim painting and then I'll give it a nice polish. Has stock springs on it so it sits like a monster truck in the front. I already have coilovers (for front), wheels and tires for it. It also has some horrid looking tail pipes going straight out the back I'll be hacking off until I can build my own exhaust.

Driving the car home was about a 25 minute drive and it seems solid, with the exception of a couple of rattles. I think the windshield is original because of condition, visor tinting, and it squeaks pretty badly, as if the seals are all dried up/non-existent in spots. Turbo spools right up, transmission seems to shift properly (though I'm a news when it comes to auto's).

It does have this oldschool "pre-turboluber" which is an eye-sore and something I'd like to get out of the car but I haven't investigated it enough to know what all that entails.

Spring cleaning has been completed, aside from cleaning out the intercooler which I'll definitely be doing soon. I'd like to get a scanmaster and go from there. Not looking to make this a hot rod as I've already been there, done that. I'd just like to improve what is already there and cruise the hell out of it.

Sorry for the long intro lol here are a couple pictures I have so far.

Who cares about the GN? What about the High wing? :D I smell a tail dragger. Cub?
Can I jump it? :)

Oh yea. Welcome to the site. Cool looking ride. GN looks good too. ;)

Happy spooling.

Yeah it's a Piper Cub, '45 I think it is. It's my grandpa's. If you buy it, you can jump it all you want haha

That windshield squeak is most likely the hood rubbing on the round rubber pad in the center of the cowl.

Put a little lithium grease on that rubber and see if it quiets down.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the club! That preluber is in a strange spot. Mine sits directly under the battery beside the remote oil filter. I would keep it if I were you, just relocate it. I wonder what's the reasoning behind the solenoid setup?

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I have no clue what purpose the fuse panel serves. How does this thing actually work, what is the benefit of it? There's a toggle switch for it in the cab, I'm assuming it's supposed to always stay on?

OMG, this has been driving me nuts! And I've been all over windshield (never thought about the hood)!!

Sorry, Welcome aboard man!! Great info on this board! You'll learn a lot!!

Just wanted to let you know that it was indeed the rubber stop! No more squeak! Thanks for the tip.

I've spent a lot of time so far, getting the car cleaned up, inside and out. Painted all the trim pieces, buffed the tail lights out, etc. installed qa1 coilovers in the front and replaced the springs in the rear, added some dirt cheap wheels that don't look too shabby, and some tires. Got some goodies coming in the mail here in the next week.

Well, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Glad my suggestion helped! That's a real pretty car you have there. :)

Those new wheels look badass!

Yeah, it really did. I'm super happy with how it came out. They're made by Vision and they're the 143 Torque model. I got these 15x8's for $300 on eBay. The bigger diameters definitely look better to me, but I couldn't pass up the price. The offset is -19.

Welcome aboard! I have had about 8 5.0s over the years. And daily a bone stock 1 owner 90 GT and my son has a 91 GT. But my Buick I never entertained selling it.:) All the info you need is here. Just search a lot and don't ask which oil or flat tappet or roller.;):)

Oh you can still be "That Guy" no matter what! In that, the search function can be very hit or miss! Not knocking the site at all, cause it's not all the time. However, a preface of, "I tried the search function, but,,,," should keep u out of flames reach!!

Car really looks good!

GN looks fantastic! The Mustang looks a cut above too! I like both wheel combonations on the mustang.
