non-buick ignition question

hey guys, i hooked up a "hybrid" GM ignition setup on my 82 toyota truck using a GM HEI ignition module and a regular 350 v8 ignition coil (the cylinder shaped one) it ran great then the other day the signal generator in the dist. broke (physically) and i replaced it and then had a hell of a time starting the truck up again, nothing changed except the signal gen (magnetic type). the instructions on hooking up the setup said that a 1000 ohm 1/4 watt resistor needs to be used b/w the module and coil to give the correct .5 ohm input resistance. i dont know much about electric stuff but can anyone think why it would be so hard to start all of a sudden after 6 months of running and starting fine (i havent had the resistor on it this whole time either, how could this mess up anything)?
