My friend had a 99 540i. He had a supercharger installed at some euro shop.He wanted me to do it .I told him he was nuts. That car was fast Make sure all front suspension parts are good . he took his in for a 60,000 service and they handed him a 5,500 estimate
They said it needed front control arms and lower rear bushings and all rear bushings and struts all around.Thats when he got rid of it and bought an X5. So get a service plan through Bmw. I love those cars. The service department will tell you what BMW stands for. BRING MONEY WITH GOOD LUCK

Yup, know all about that! There's a pretty technically oriented subculture (like this motley crew
) that offers DIY info on just about any aspect of repair and maintenance, so I'll be turning wrenches as necessary. Nothing really seems too difficult.

Kinda like the GNs= if you're looking to go fast on the cheap, stick with SBCs or SBFs.......

It was owned by an investment broker - he lives about a block or so from Bill Gates (yes, Microsoft Bill Gates); according to his service writer, the guy was in for service every 5k miles like clockwork, and had everything done to the car that needed to be done.

Watch those 4.4's...I know of 2 people...1 with a 97 540 and 1 with a 740(Dont remember the year..But was a late 90's) That had the oil pump bolts fall out and drop into the chain that actually drives the chain,Breaking it and leaving the car with no oil pump. You dont even know what bmw wants to fix that.
Also...There is a special tool needed to set the cams...That tool alone runs over 1k.A head gasket on my buddies 540 was a very costly job,Even with us doing it. But otherwise...Nice car..... Good luck with it.
