Lightbulb What's So Hard About This???

Hey guys, am I the only one to get pissed when someone comes up and admires your ride, however, call it a "Monte Carlo". I get ticked everytime.

What's soooooo hard about determining the difference between the two. Even with the "Grand National" badging, people still, for some reason, can't tell the difference between the two. Though, they do apologize.

Any thoughts?

Yup- the MC SS got plenty of marketing $$ back in the day, while the Buicks didn't. Won't matter if you show up with with a Grand Prix, Olds Cutlass, or a Buick- paint it black, and the public perception says it's a MC SS.

Don't get grumpy- use thal lack of knowledge to your advantage & sucker 'em in......

What would your reaction and counterattack be if you were to consider that about half of the people that do this do it intentionally to get a knee jerk reaction. I tell them thanks and that it is a '86 aerocoupe, and they go up for a closer look, and then realize that they have been had.
Sorry, but I really believe that most of the people that do this do it intentionally, fully aware that turbo Buick owners get their nose out of joint over this.

I put one guy in his place one day.

I had the GN on the trailer. Stopped at a deli to get a bite to eat. There was maybe 10 people inside. Of course all the guys inside the deli were looking at the car through the window. I place my order and step aside and wait for my food. Then this guys walks in a shouts "who's car is that on the trailer" Thinking that he hit it or something, I tell him that's its mine. Then he replies in a loud voice "dude nice Monte" I tell him in front of everyone else "learn how to read and when you know the type of car it is, then come back in and we'll talk". Everyone in the store started laughing and the guy walked out.

I use to hear that all the time in my GN (now I have a T-Type) and I use to politely say: "Thanks!, but it's a Buick" Just last week I met my wife for a few beers after her work and I drove the Twin Turbo car there. One of her co-workers came out and said "wow (not exicted, either) you drive a......... buick." I said "yep, a POS Buick at that!" All the time laughing inside. I'll have to give her a ride in it some day. Maybe run it down the freeway at 60 and take it SIDEWAYS for her! Those POS Buicks! My car smokes REAL bad at 40 mph.
That's really why I built the twin turbo car. I thought it was so funny hearing people at the track saying "My Brothers, cousins, neighbors, friend has one of these, but it's TWIN turbo!!!" So, one night out in the shop I grabbed another stock turbo and held it in place and figured "YA! I can build one of "THOSE" twin turbo FBI cars!! So, the fabricating began. Now I can open the hood and people say "WOW I've never seen one like THAT before!" But last year he was bragging about the "twin turbo" one that his aforementioned friend had. Go figure?

I don't get the Monte thing much anymore. In fact I hardly see any mid-eighties Monte Carlos around. Today was a first for me though. Someone said, "Hey, that's a sweet old car!"

I have owned an 87 gn, 87 T t top, and hard top T. Everytime it never fails that a fool comes up with lame azz stories about gnx twin turbo fbi crap, special edition crap, etc. Oh my buddy had one with 3500 hp stock and other fables. My worst time ever dealing with this was at my old job. I had worked there for years and a guy from one of my companies customers would always tell me about his buddies 81 saturn yellow regal supersport. Factory edition. Yes I said factory edition. It had a Three Fitty in it so it was better than my gn For more than 5 years he baffled me with lame azz comments over and over. One day his buddy came down to my work to pick him up as his commercial vehicle broke down. So naturally he came down in the "FACTORY SUPER SPORT REGAL " and then proceeded to park next to my mint 87 gn. We popped the hood and he kept calling my turbocharger an aftermarket supercharger, my stock location V4 IC a HD transcooler, etc. Even went as far as to say his car came v8 and why did I put that puny little v6 in there. I exclaimed how it was a factory car. He laughed at me and chuckled as if I was some hillbilly or something. At the time on 110 octane with ta49 turbo, atr race chip, fuel pump, hotwire etc. my car ran mid 12's occasionally down to 12.20's. He talked all this noise about smoking that little six banger and how I had some paint shop make them badges and how the spoiler was from JC whitney as his was factory and in reality it had a monte ss spoiler on his regal Guy was a tool that owned it and my aqauintence was no better. I never could get these guys to fess up that they were full of HORSESH$T! So it was right at closing time that day and we pulled out on the road and it was on. I pulled more busses on him and greyhound wanted to sponsor me He then made excuses of how his 4 barrel was not kicking in and how he did not hit passing gear I never really fought with him or anyone since then. It is just part of the territory. People are gonna be like that. The educated guys never seem to act that way. Just the morons.

It used to really upset me, but now I just say, "yeah, thanks". And leave it at that. I don't want to put us in with the mustang crowd for being known as jerks.

Not me

I took the ole GN out yesterday after getting some bad medical news and filled it up at the gas station and 3 different people stopped to look at her. I then proceeded to the local Buick-Pontiac dealership to check out a GTO and 8 salesman were out checking it out . I woke up this morning to go and get a cup of coffee at the local seven eleven and a guy eyed it all the way to the door and held it open for me telling me that he sees my car every now and then and it's a bad A$$ car. I love driving my GN, it makes me very HAPPY

Oh yeah,
A good freind of mine has a sweet Saleen, I don't hold it against him but it's so nice he won the Dallas Autorama a couple of weeks ago; so you know it's nice. He was upset last Sunday, I called to ask him how his car shows went over the weekend, he one the 1st one and lost the 2nd one!

Had 2 people stop me yesterday to comment on the car. I usually just go with whatever they say cause I don't have all day to explain. What should have taken me 30 mins to do yesterday took over an hour after chatting with these folks. Call it a monte, a pinto, gremlin, or just plain ole bad azz car, I just say "yep...yep...yep" and try to keep going sometimes

After living in this 'hood for about 5 years, I finally got to speak to a guy that lives just 'round the corner from me. His wife and my wife hang out once in a while, and our kids play together. He has one of those bat-mobile looking RX7s. Very cool car. Since he has a black, turbocharged car I figured he knew his stuff. When I introduced myself he said "you're the guy with the black Monte Carlo right?". I was extremely disappointed but I was able to say "No, it's a Grand National." Those words were met with a totally blank stare. I said "Buick....3.8L turbo....1987...." He had no idea what I was talking about. I haven't talked to him since and I have developed an inexplicable need to crush any RX7 I see on the road.
