Which insurance to use?
I'm looking to find out which insurance company I should use with my newly purchased 87 T. I was going to use progressive, but after talking with them on the phone the guy told me to go with companies like JCtaylor, ClassicIns, Grundy and Hagerty. Who have you guys had the best experience with when it comes to dealing with claims, customer service and so on? I should be getting the title tomorrow and want to get it ready to drive this weekend. Let me know what you guys think.
thanks -Dan |

Now that they're approaching 20...
Greetings,
I am a long-time J.C. Taylor customer for numerous older cars, but I decided to "experiment" with State Farm's classic policy for my 87 T. They fumbled and stumbled a bit (cause they don't write many modern classics-- at least my agent doesn't) but in the end all was well and they are competitive as far as price. This is an agreed-value policy. They required photos and registration paperwork proving Antique/Classic (in this case, classic) registration by the state. And, of course, I had to warrant that it is not a daily driver. I believe if you plan to "regular drive" it you're SOL in most cases. Even Hagerty, which I believe DOES NOT have mileage limits, DOES limit the TYPE OF USE. This would mean occasional trip to work or shopping is okay, but primarily must be club/exhibition/show. No everyday stuff. So check with your regular car policy agent first (if you have one), then hit one of the name brands they mentioned-- Hagerty, JC Taylor, Grundy, etc. are all probably excellent. My understanding is that about last September JC started writing for 1987 Regals and similar era cars (though I still went with State Farm) and the other companies probably recognize the TR's without raised eyebrows now as well. Good luck! Doug Last edited by GNXcess : May 16th, 2006 at 09:46 PM. |

Dan, Lots of the Chicagoland people use Rally Insurance for their Buicks. Give them a call and they can give you a quote.

Rally is looking like a good choice right now, only $185 a year. I've gotta fill out an application and get that all taken care of before I can get coverage from them, but it seems like a decent company. JC Whitney only accepts people over the age of 25 so I'm screwed on that one. I'm going to check out state farm and see how they are. Thanks guys

I just talked to my local State Farm agent and if my car was appraised for what I bought it for, I would only be paying $15 a month for the buick. This doesn't sound like a bad idea because they are close and it would be easier to deal with for claims and everything. I don't want to have to fill out paper work and then mail it to a company, then wait for a reply. I will probably drive over there tomorrow and get regular insurance until I get an appraisal, so that I can get antique insurance. Maybe I can give the appraiser $50 and have him say it's worth more than it is
. I don't plan on making the car a daily driver but maybe a once a week nice day kind of car. I'll see how they will limit my driving habits when I get antique insurance. So I guess I changed my mind again, sounds like I might be going with State Farm.-Dan |

Ponykillr are you sure it was State Farm and not Farmers that was a joke? I have had State Farm for many years and last year had my GN vandalised. State Farm was shocked to see how much I thought the car was worth so they sent out an Appraiser who handled Specialty cars. The appraiser looked at examples I had from the Web and looked online for examples also. In the end State Farm gave me over 21k for my GN and let me buy the car for 1500 bucks. They never argued about the price or enything. Great Company

State Farm quoted me $15 a month($180 a year) for $7500 in coverage. I will be 20 years old next tuesday so that sounds pretty reasonable to me being that I'm young. Plus I have another car and a motorcycle that I need to get insured, so it would be easiest to go with one company instead of two or more. There's a local place I can take my car to get appraised, so I have that covered. The only thing that I'm not sure about is the fact that my car is modified. One of the guys at work said that the insurance company might give me trouble since its not stock. What do you guys think?
thanks Dan |
