I like a little chrome, the problem is a little and I could never stop at a little. So before I knew it I had hundreds of dollars in chrome and the engine bay started looking bling, bling.
Good Luck.. Chrome Inside |

FWIW & IMHO:
If I were setting up a motor cxompartment from scratch, (read stocK), I would combine very little chrome, a little polished stainless, some black or similiar color gloss powder coating, & mostly flat or semi-flat black or similiar color powder coating. The color & brilliance of the factory black out would do nicely. Colored anodizing on the aluminum, & either clear or gold iridite dip cadium plating on steel would be also nice. Brite HPC (High Performance Coating) (Jet-Hot or something similiar) would be a nice touch in lieu of the chrome

Chrome is OLD SCHOOL! If you are restoring a 60's era musclecar back to the 60's CHROME IT! Otherwise...satin aluminum, mill finish aluminum ao polished aluminum!

I love the look of chrome. Maybe old school, i think it's timeless.
I ended up chroming alot of stuff. Fell into the trap of might as well do this and that while the car is apart. Worried about the heat issue with chrome we'll see how she runs when i finish putting it back together. My car sees about a 1000 miles per year and maybe some local shows. I think i went alittle overboard with the chrome, but i like the show with the some go. To each his own, the nice clean stock look is cool also. |

This is just my worthless 2 cents. I always felt that anyone could put store-bought chrome and polished items in the mix. I like a more personalized approach such as color keying. Painting the valve covers, intake plenum body color with polished raised ribs looks awesome, as well as i/c tubing, and radiator support top. Again, just my preferance.

No reason you can't have some blink AND go fast. I like the look of chrome but yes it is easy to go over the edge with it. I am teetering over that edge as it is right now. If done right it looks nice and is easy to keep clean. Polished stuff as mentioned already is high maintenance and scratches if you look at it cross-eyed.
One thing I have never liked is changing all the wire conduits to a color other than black.
