Buying a car, sales tax for county you live in or county you buy in???

I live in Illinois and my girlfriend (whom we are searching a car for) lives in Will County, which has a 6.5% sales tax. Cook County (a hop skip and jump away) is where the car is. Cook County has a 7.75% sales tax. So what will be applied to the price of the car???? Thanks in advance!

It'll be based on the county you register it in, basically where you live.

Not always true. If your an Illinois resident and you buy a new or used car from a dealer, tax is paid and collected in the county where bought. If you buy a used car from a private individual, in or out of state tax is based on the value/ age of the car. In IL if you buy an 87 and it cost less than $15,000 all you owe is $25.00 tax. If the car is priced above 15,000 a tax table comes into play. So, if you buy from a individual and the car was over 15,000, you use the table to figure taxes. But of course no matter what, the value is Always under $15,000

The county is where I would've paid it to directly when getting my tag (cash transaction). However, the car was over 10 years old so I didn't have to pay sales tax.

this is for an 03 eclipse for 10,995 after trade in car was originally 11995. So are you saying I will have to pay their county tax???

According to the RUT-50 Vehicle Use tax Transaction Return, Table A (for vehicles under $15,000) purchsed from a private party, a vehicle 1 or less model years tax is $390.00. But since your buying from a dealer, they will use form ST-556 Sales Tax Transaction Return and you'll probably get stuck getting charged the county's tax rate. Thats why many timres better off buying from a private party. If the car is on consignment, you may be able to get around this extra tax.

That's really good to know. I didn't know there was a distinction between private and dealership. Just another reason to buy/sell yourself.

Hmmm, went to the dealer today and they claimed 6.5%. Guess it matters where you live.

That is correct when you buy a new or used car from a licensed dealer in IL.

Thats why people who live in Cook county ty to buy cars in Dupage or Will still get nailed with like 8% sales tax.
