Thinking about selling...

This car. Its just a constant source of stress for me. It has been broke forever. I've spent over $45,000 trying to get it right. It has all the best of the best parts, and is in mint condition. I wonder what I can sell it for? Maybe sell it and buy a new cobra or something. Or maybe just chill for awhile with the car thing. One of the best parts of owning a fast car is the friends you meet, and the events you go to. You don't have to have a car to do this stuff. Hell yeah, I'll miss it. I feel like I'm going to be giving my kid up for adoption or something. I really do love this car, but why isn't it ever right? Its apart more than its running, and I don't even beat on it! Half the time the "professional" I pay to do what I feel I cannot, screws it up more than I could on my own! Well, its parked for awhile now, I just don't have the patience to mess with it. I've spent too much time and money on it not to have at least a little fun and some good timeslips.

This is a public service message from me to everyone who's car runs good: DON'T TOUCH IT!!!! Be happy you ain't me, drive it, and burn some rubber. I haven't done a good burnout in forever, just because I'm afraid I'll break it.

Yes. Thats not a typo. This includes the car, which was $10,700. A couple motors, a couple sets of heads, intercoolers, turbos, computers, a little paint, wheels, tranny, a whole bunch of little stuff. If I had a spare couple hours I'd sit down and figure it all up, if it didn't make me sick. I've dropped about 10 grand a year since I bought it, about 3 1/2 years ago. The only things I paid to have done was the motor and tranny, and the paint. So my $45000 includes some labor.

Lots of folks sure could identify with that one!

Definitely observed that situation over & over & over.

Hang in, Sam...take a 'break" from the TR for a while & see how you're feeling then.

Yeah, I could have bought a GNX, but its not like I only wanted a 13 second car. I wanted to modify something to go 10's.

Just take a break, it'll all pass. I'm currently on a 5-6 year break from my car. I did have one botched machine shop engine rebuild about 4 years ago, so I let the car sit a little longer. The cars not eating anything and I've been playing with my daughter as she grows. She's 6 now, so maybe I'll try to get the car finished by the time she is 16! Actually, I'm slowly beginning to get everything back in order and start on it again, but I'm in now hurry. LOL! I've porbably bought and sold the parts to complete it 3 times now.

Your numbers are almost exactly the numbers that I had into my first last GN. I figure $45K myself. That (like you) includes breakage over a three to three and one half year period. The last six months I had it, I put $10,000 into it fixing stuff and upgrading the rear end (Hotchkiss, moser axles, c-clip eliminators, etc.). After encountering yet more problems with false knock that I fought for six months and couldn't be fixed, I dumped the car. Had it listed for $13K, then 11.5K and finally sold it for $9K. I would have been money ahead if I'd have simply donated the car to the Little Sisters of The Poor six months before that.

I've had my present GN for about a year and a half now. This one doesn't have a roll bar so I have to keep it tuned down to 12.0's or slower. It costs me about 1/10th of what the other car cost me to run 11.1's. Do not expect to get your money back out of performance mod's. Consider it entertainment expense, cause it's not an investment. It's money you'll never see again.

Don't get me wrong, I had a blast doing it and wouldn't take a million dollars for the experience. I just wouldn't do it again.

Sam, take a break
It's a beautiful car and you've done it justice...you just need a break. I went through it myself.
Sold my last car, (not suggesting this for you) and took a 2 year hiatus away from (my personal) cars completely. Shows, racing, everything. It really helped rejuvenate my interest....that's when I bought my TR and made all smart decisions, well, most (not like the last time!). In the end, my family and I are all better off.
Now would probably be a great time to swing the car my way and you can forget about it for awhile. Enjoy NOT thinking about it for a bit.
Hang in there brother, we'd hate to lose you to the non-darkside.

I would at least get it running (right) before I would consider selling it especially after all the time, money, and effort you have already spent on that car! If at that point you still want to sell it than that is probably your best decision although you will always have in the back of your head how much money you spent on the car (it's too bad you can't forget) ..........

Bottom line is you have to do what makes YOU happy!

Good luck and I hope something goes right for ya (it has to eventually)

Hell, if I could get it running right, I'd keep it! I think it will run 10's right now, WOT is not a problem. Its all the smoke at idle, and can't seem to get a pcv system to work. I'll figure out the pcv thing, its no big deal. I actually enjoy doing that kind of stuff, designing and engineering, for something minor and quick to install. Trying to figure out why my cars laying a thick blue smoke screen at idle, thats not fun. I know its going to be something that sucks, no matter what. Probably the heads.

I know I'll never see the money, I've had enough cars to know that. I can't bring myself to put it up for sale because of all the time, money, and effort in it. I wish I could walk away from it for awhile, but its my only real source of fun and relaxation. I like going out with my friends with their cars, and the occasional street race. You guys have familys and other distractions to entertain you and occupy your time. I don't. Its so important to me to get this thing right, and I'm impatient and determined. I can't let it be. Which is why its broken all the time, always upgrading to the next best thing, which inevitibly, is a pos.

Scott, you'll be getting it soon, I would like the damn thing to run before you get it, as I'm sure you guys don't want to choke to death when you have to move it around the shop! Or push it, for that matter. I'm thinking late november, unless I take it apart indefinitly.

Thanks for the support guys, hopefully I'll get this resolved soon. But that new cobra is looking mighty good! Actually, they are kinda plain and ugly, but the idea of not staring at gauges and worrying while driving sounds good!

Yours can't compare to mine! I didn't have all the motor problems you had but trans, accident, driveshaft, etc... bit me. Just need to track it down and do some testing. These cars are expensive in the low 11's and 10's. Know your limits I guess.

$45K!!

I've had mine for 5 years, it had 198k miles on it, I paid $5000 and all in all I probably have about $15k in it. Still has the same motor and tranny in it, and runs 12.0 on pump gas with 2.1 60' times.

Guess I got lucky.
