Trouble shooting gear selector not engaging 1st gear

87 gn, basically stock and low miles. Car will easily go into all forward gears (and reverse) except 1st gear. The lever physically won't go any further back past 2nd gear. The Shifter is basically "bottomed out" in second gear and won't travel back any further. Is the cable stretched? what should I check? TIA!
