Trans That has been sitting???

I did a deal with a buddy, He has a trans that was a new gm, Well the car blew up and its been sitting for about 3 to 4 years, with about 500 to a 1000 miles on it, Do I have to take it apart to check it out or will it be fine with just a filter and fluid change,,
I got the trans to put a 9x11 in it because it was new,,
Please let me know what you all think,,
Thank You All Very Very Much For The Input,,
Seneca Lafler,,,
