LED in speed sensor

Has anyone tested the speed sensor led by disconnecting it from the back of the speedometer. It should light up with the key in the on position correct? If you have, what color is it? I know this sounds dumb, but I guess that is because I am dumb. The one I am testing doesn't light at all. Just looking for someone to agree. Not to agree that I am dumb, but that the led should be lighted with key on.
Thanks
Danny

Never mind, I found the problem. The last owner had spliced into the wire @ the ALDL to make a manual lock up, and had removed the switch and left the wire bare. I have installed a manual temperature guage in the center consol, and when I put all the cables and wires back up the metal temp cable just happened to touch the bare spot locking the converter. What are the chances?
