Why won't my TCC work. I bought the car last year and hasen't worked at all.
I have checked for power from the brake switch and the power is right at the solenoid. The resistance on the ground is 24 oms. I took off the solenoid and hooked it up to a battery and it cycles. The plunger holds air pressure when I blow in to it. I put a switch in the ground wire to force it on and still no workie. Thinking maybe the converter is a non lock up it has GM part # 8653702 and a DEGF on the tag, its a 12.5" with lock up and 6 pads for diesel trucks. With the solenoid out I inserted a small screwdriver in the hole and has about 1/8" travel up there. Is there anything mechanical between the solenoid and the converter that will bleed off the oil? I replaced the solenoid yesterday thinking it might be weak and the same thing. I have tried a different ECM too. Any other ideas? ![]() |

You certainly have worked hard towards diagnosing the problem! Let me offfer up a test that may help isolate the problem.
Remove the TCC solenoid. Above it is a spool valve and spring. Remove the retaining ring & washer that holds the valve in place. You will see the springs on top of the valve. Remove the springs and put the valve back in the bore first, followed by the springs, washer and retaining ring. Now, if your transmission has the physical ability to lock the converter, it will be locked...full time. Place your shifter in Neutral and start the car. Put the car in gear (D or R) and see what happens. If it dies immediately, good. It can lock and the problem lies somewhere with the solenoid or valve body. If it idles fine in gear (when it should now be locked), your problem is more serious. It could be anything from a non-lock up converter, damaged converter, pump problem, input shaft O-ring problem, etc.
