Today we were heading to watch some fireworks and she said she would be fine moving away. I mentioned Canada and she said Colorado. Man, she's got me thinking now. I am seriously wanting out of the cornfields. I know the grass is never greener on the other side but I need a change. I work in either stupid heat or stupid cold and would like to try something else out. I want to live somewhere that is the opposite of Indiana. I would like some terrain changes and still have all four seasons. I am a hydraulic's specialist so finding a job won't be hard but finding one that pays close to what I make now is going to be the tough one. Has anyone else just up and moved like that?
Take some vacations first and find a town/state/area you like first. Don't just up and move and leave a good job.
No advice as far as moving, but I've argued for years that the midwest has the overall worst weather in the country. We get the fewest number of nice days of any area in the 48. Yes the weather sucks half the year in either extreme of the country, bt the other half stacks up pretty well. What do we get, like 2 weeks of decent weather spread out over the spring and fall? Always on days when you can't utilize them very well. And yes I'm going to play the humidity card. It makes it all suck that much worse. If you move anywhere for weather, get clear outta the midwest.
Upped and moved away more than a few times.... for good jobs, better offers, many reasons. Always came back home to Arizona. The summers suck, our state government is laughable and idiots from other places keep moving here and bringing with them their idiotic notions about what Arizona SHOULD be (F them), but it's the best place I've ever lived, bar none.
I have already been through this once. I got out of the Navy in 2005 after 9 years. I loved living in Virginia Beach, just didnt like being away from the wife and kids all the time. I don't want to move back though. I would find a job before doing anything. I do make really good money where I work now but the environment is one of the most brutal in the world. I turn 40 this year and my job is ruining my body. My knees, ankles and back are constantly in pain. Laying in odd positions welding for hours is hard on the body. I don't know how much more I can handle. I have been all over the world and the country. I loved Colorado and have friends in Grand Junction.
I have NO regrets about leaving WI, and settling here in East TN. We're in the Smoky Mt. foothills, just 20miles from the mountains. Lot's of terrain, not a flat spot within 100 miles. I love the four seasons, relatively mild winters with not much more than a 2-3 inches of total snowfall per year. Our summers are relatively mild, except this year of course, the entire half of the country is HOT. A real spring and fall. Our weather here in the Eastern half of the state is, remarkably, totally different than the Western half of the state. Memphis and Nashville and that part of the state have much hotter summers, and MUCH colder winters than we do here in the Eastern half. Must be our proximity to the mountains. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone living around here that doesn't absolutely love it.
I made a drastic move when I turned 36. I moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Honolulu, HI. It was pretty much a decision that had to be made fairly quick. At first I second guessed myself after accepting the position (I was here without the family for about a month). When the family came over it made everything feel just like home. Trust me when I say 4 seasons are over-rated. I've been thru the snow shoveling seasons, leaf raking so on and so forth. My hands would get numb when temps hit mid 30's, not even freezing yet (32 degrees). Snow is only nice on one day of the year, Christmas. Anything after that is a huge pain to clean up and drive in on the way to work. I do miss not being able to see the family as much but they have a nice place to stay when they visit. I'm not sure a place like Hawaii would work for you since you like the 4 seasons but I know there are states that don't have as much of a swing in temps. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do, just don't wait too long (years) on making a decision. You might miss out on a chance of a lifetime.
I've done it a few times. I left Detroit and made the move to Raleigh NC. I was born and raised in the "D", but I will never go back. I love it here now. I would never tell anyone that it would not be risky, but you my find a better place. Do your home work, go visit and talk with the locals. It maybe the best thing you ever do.
