Welcome surprise- bad timing...

Just got back today from a short underway, before I left the car was running like crap. Didn't have much time before I left to really troubleshoot it, tried a few things like coil pack, module, etc, to no avail. Fast forward a month, I come home to a message on the machine saying I won a free dyno session at JBA performance. I went there to buy meth a month ago, and signed up for a dyno session drawing. The good news is I won. The bad news is the damn car runs like crap, so I wouldn't embarrass myself by throwing it up on the dyno.

Guess I now have even more motivation to get the thing running right!

Anyhow, just figured I'd check back in here since I have been away. Now I have to go read all the old poo-slinging posts and get caught up.

Merry Christmas all.

It hates me.

No, it has a KR gremlin. I haven't spent much time troubleshooting it, just been driving it every day, and being easy on it. Before I left I tried a known good coilpack and module, a new coilpack, a different AFPR, etc. I just got another coilpack and module in the mail while I was gone, as well as a MAF. On Tlink all my readings are good, I am rich if anything. My fuel pressure rises with boost like it should. I have tried more fuel pressure, no change. I have tried turning on the alky, no change. I have used a stethascope on the injectors, they all sound fine. (I need to get a noid lite) I checked for cracks in the exhaust, found none. (need to jack it up and try it again, it has been a few months)

I have Razors PAC alky, but I am trying to find my KR issues without it first. This car has always had KR, even as a hot air. I am starting to think maybe the roller timing chain is noisy. I also want to check my cam again and make sure I have no flat lobes, etc.

I have a few weeks to fix it, just need to get busy now. I will definately be posting back my work and results, if any...

I have found that cam timing can have an affect on knock. Was the cam degreed in? Is the timing chain old? Stretched?

I know a fella that came to me complaining of knock and basically said the same thing as you. He had checked everything! I thought a moment and asked, "How old is the timing set?" It was old and I told him he should try changing it. Hadn't heard from him in a long time, until one day he called the shop for some other reason and brought up the fact that he did change the timing set soon after we had talked and the car felt like new. No more knock problem. You know a stretched timing set only retards the cam a little. That is how critical cam timing is to proper cylinder pressures.

thanks for refreshing my memory wang. I need to replace my old double roller, asap! I think its stretched, sometimes the timing jumps around a little bit in neutral or park, but no serious knock here. Just a tad

It was a new double roller, now has about 3k on it I am guessing. Nice and tight still when I had to front cover off to replace. I have read about some rollers being noisy enough to trigger the knock sensor.

I just need to start from scratch, inore what I have tried in the past and start anew. A lot of my troubleshooting is always interrupted and the car will have to sit for weeks or a month or two. Kind of tough to stay on top of it that way.

Dumb question! But have you tried a new or different knock sensor?

Different, then new, then new AC Delco. No change. Lou, I have joked with the wife about dropping it of with you since I have no time, but not sure if I am ready to fund your new dual turbo big block project. (in other words, you could probably fund one for what it may take to fix my heap...)

My folks are visiting in February, I am hoping I can get it KR free by then and spend some dyno time with my dad. That would make my year!

Lou, you charge by the mechanics hour, or how pissed you get at the car?

I have no race cars presently, I do all the wrenching on the TT car presently installing a 377 in motor that should put down about 1600 HP, As to what I charge the answer in not enough! it all depends on attitude. I have no time for unappreciative people. You also have to humour my cheap jokes, sarcasm & my charming personality LOL ! Merry Christmas Lou
