Letter of Ca. Emission Compliance?

Im been trying to smog my GN for the past few months now and when it aint one thing its another. Now I must go to a Test Only place to smog it. So I went and since the car is not from California, I have to take it to a Referee to have them inspect the car to make sure it is smog legal and put a sticker on it. Well I call the 800 number they give me to make an appointment and they tell me a need a letter stating the car has the proper emission equipment for smog in California. They give me another 800 to get the letter. I call that number and now they say the cars too old and I need to get that letter from the Manufacture of the vehicle...... and they dont have that number. Has anyone delt with this before and does anyone have a # for GM to get this letter? Its a long shot but Id figure Id ask here first! Thanks!

The emissions sticker under the hood determines the emissions classification of the vehicle. Do you still have the emissions decal near the blower box. Also, if the vehicle is 49 state emissions certified, then there is a options code for it on the build sheet on the trunk lid. If it is CA emissions, there is also an options code for that too. Unless your car is from Canada, I fail to see why your vehicle is required to see a Referee.

Well the sticker on the heater box says the car has proper emissions for transport to Canada, thats why I need that letter. Know where I could get one?

I sure hope you have your Service Parts Identification Label on your trunk lid, because I had to dig in some dusty archives in my garage. So here is your answer:

All 1987 GM passenger cars (10 digit of VIN=H) with an RPO designation NA5 on the Service Parts Identification Label meet USEPA emissions standards for 1987.

If the Service Parts Identification Label is missing from your trunk lid, then you are SOL

Well I still do have that sticker in the Trunk, is there any way you could make a copy of that page saying

"All 1987 GM passenger cars (10 digit of VIN=H) with an RPO designation NA5 on the Service Parts Identification Label meet USEPA emissions standards for 1987."

So I could take it to the referee to try to get the "BAR" sticker on my car to get it smogged? Thanks!

Please tell me which Referee Station you're scheduled to go to and I will make sure that a copy is forwarded to the Referee Region manager. The question still remains, is NA5 a listed option on the Parts Identification Label on the trunk lid. The sticker may be there, but is the correct option code listed?

I just double checked the trunk and yes it has the NA5 listed on the op codes. I am trying to get the car Smoged in the San Diego area but I havent been able to make an appointment yet because when I called the 1-800 number the SMOG Only place gave me, they (the people on the phone representing the Referee) told me I needed to get them a letter stating the vehicle complied to California Emission's before I could even take the car to a referee. Now I cant find where to get a letter stating that to give to the people. Am I making sense or am I just lost? Thanks!

Tell the Referee Scheduling center to just give you an appointment. Send me you VIN number via my email address and I will be speaking directly with the Region 4 Referee Manager tomorrow.
