Unhappy Red Hot Cat

Posted on general tech board. Maybe somebody can help me on this board. Can catalytic converters stop up like a collapsed exhaust pipe? Ran compression check looking for an intermittant miss. 150 on all 6. Put in new plugs. When I did the comp. test, I unplugged the Cal Pak. Plugged it back in and started the engine and it backfired a couple of times. Tonight I noticed an orange glow between the engine and firewall. When I looked to see what it was I saw a red or red-orange catalytic converter. Not much exhaust coming through tailpipes.
The Cal Pak?
The Converter?
