Painting my '87 GN...Is a color change a big no-no?

I have an '87 GN, which was originally owned by my Father. The body is perfect, but the paint, which sucked from the day we drove it home from the dealer, is now faded, scratched and checked.

I'm going to get it repainted soon, but I'm wondering just how blasphemous it would be if I painted the car a different color like red or white. If this was a T-Type or something, I wouldn't think twice about it, but since it's a GN, I'm just not sure.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Definately do not paint it RED!!! I'd go with the black because that is what makes the car!! On the other hand though, it's your car and you can do whatever you want to it!! Thats the joys of the hobby! I always thought that a cream white, something like the TTA's would look nice on a GN! Paint a set of GTA wheels grey? I was just thinking about that this morning!! But yeah, I'd stick with black, Plus it would be much more expensive to have a complete color change! -----Jeremy

Leave it alone. For many reasons. One in 1987 a Buick dealership painted 6
GN's and turbo "T"s BMW Red.My stepfather worked on these cars.in 1997 my GN was stolen. So I was shopping
Saw an add.I though maybe red would be nice.Car was in perfct conditon. But even that didn't help. It was dahm ugly.

Keep the value and your sanity. Do it the orginal color.........Just my opion.

paint it what ever color you would like. what makes the car is the eight digit on your vin#. just because it isn't black it doesn't mean it will no longer be a GN.

RE: colors are personel, it is your choice.

The person who said paint it a color you like is right.

My reason was this. The work involved to change a car color is
so much more work. I know.Just recently I was re-painting my white Limited.
I wanted to do a color I saw. Even though, all the glass and chrome was removed, there was still door jams, trunk lid, to make the car look right.

Now if money and time is not a factor. Please do as you will. Also I don't know the condition of this car. Fenders replaced, same color.

Last is,if you go to sell it someday. I gaurentee, someone will say I thought they came Black.Part of the charm. JMO>>>>>

But it is yours, and that's what makes things fun. Differences.By the way,my limited is the stock white which it came as. Sweet....And the blue interior looks right. Your call. Really would like to see it done. I was lucky to have a
someone with a bodyshop. Let me do work.....JMO

Red is nice, but it is a GN. White is out and out boring. I painted my wife's 87 Regal white a couple years ago. Talk about a boring color. I just repainted it black. A guy I know painted his GN some trick color. Some kind of metallic purple or somthing. Had some chrome under the hood and a mild build. Got $18 grand on Ebay for it. I like black, myself, expecially if your painter knows what he's doing. Check the link in my signature for the RED look.

If it ain't black, it ain't a GN!

Very few cars that have ever come out of Detroit shows like the GN. The body style (G-body) compliments the color black, and the color black compliments the body style. I've saw many a black car and NONE looks as good as the GNs.

Wink

I totally agree about GN's being left black. There are some really cool colors.
Did you know that there are 8 people in the world who create the colors on all the cars we drive?

It's true, unless you go with a House of color paint that you can make.
Stilll GN in my mind is black."T" with different interior colors,i can see.

But it is your car. And my opion should not change it. I only am looking at big picture...................

A friend of mine wanted to change his color also but was talked out of it and he got the best-of-the-best paint job in triple black and he was very happy he kept it that color. However I did see a nicely done white one that I would have picked over any black one. With good wheels and the W02 package, it really stands out. To each his own. Like Turbopowered68 said, it is the 7 in the VIN that makes your car worth what it is.
