What debate did you watch? Obama was on the defense the whole time. Although McCain wasn't as strong as he should have been (forcefull), he seemed well composed.

Obama had very specific answers. McCain had very macro answers. McCain kept interrupting, and when he'd attack Obama, Obama would defend himself and McCain would get frustrated and interrupt to attack again.
I cant imagine this guy being an effective leader. When the pressure is on, he clearly loses his cool

who would have thought... the people who are for mccain think he did a great job, and the people who are against him think he did a horrible job. shocking.
i thought the whole thing was a joke, myself. they are both obviously parroting talking points that their advisors fed them, and they don't understand any of the actual effects of them. one great example was how mccain said that he doesn't believe in ethanol subsidies because he thinks they "cause inflation and create false economic incentives." yet the bailout package he supported did both of those things on a much larger scale than the ethanol subsidies, which are puny by comparisson. and obama has lots of specific ideas for programs he wants to see more of and more funding for, and he has very un-specific ideas about the programs he is going to cut, that "don't work." and somehow this is magically going to cure the deficit in four years! bwahahaha!!! that's a good one. its so ridiculous that they both think they can solve the deficit when they can't even come up with specific areas of the government that they are willing to cut, besides some tiny piss-ant programs that would barely make a dent in the gov't budget, and in the senate they support and vote for bills that add to the deficit tremendously. they are both such jokes its not even funny.

Nobody wins or loses these "debates" because they aren't even debates. They are question and answer sessions. And they are boring.
Did I mention meaningless? They are meaningless. The candidates should be given a topic and be allowed to go at it with each other... to talk directly to one another and ask questions of one another. The moderators only job would be to keep them on topic and to not let them talk over each other too much. Then we could learn who can or cannot think on their feet, who does or does not really understand an issue, and who can or cannot keep their cool under pressure.

I would rather see 10 debates in a town hall setting, where we the people get to ask the questions, but that will never happen. If this can't be done, see if you can find some clips of the French Presidential debates. What you said is exactly how they were done.
