Lightbulb Term Limits for Congress

I think this would be an easy way to clean up our Congress. Most of these elected officials stay there for years, get caught up in the Washington mess and become as close to celebrities as they'll ever be. Term limits would help eliminate this and would actually help getting ordinary people represented since it would change every 6 years let's say.

Thoughts?? If our President can only be in office 8 years, why do we have to have the same losers (on both sides of the aisle) in the house and senate forever??

You re on the right track. They spend all their time and energy trying to get re-elcted rather than serve the people.

yeah, pretty much anything to take some of the unfair advantage away from incumbents sounds good to me. getting rid of mccain/feingold would help, too.

But of course, it's never going to happen. Our government is out of control. The nonsense that has taken place in the last eight years forced me to conclude that the US government is not just out of touch with the electorate, they are consciously, deliberately at odds with us.

Our system is not a constitutional republic. It is not a democracy. It is a plutocracy.

Now that we're all connected with the internet, we can switch from a republic to direct democracy!

TERM LIMITS AREN"T THE PROBLEM!

Personally, the only folks I can think of that CARE about America, are military personal that have stayed in service for many years. Even all of them aren't qualified, IMHO, but it is someplace to start with. You want to be a politician, you need 10 years of military as a base reqirement. We could alter that for 10 years of service in something that HELPED America out, perhaps the RED CROSS, Salvation Army, something like that where the pay is low, but the feeling of helping would be high.

I can't think of anything, offhand, without going through his history that President Eisenhower did that wasn't for the betterment of America. He's been my favorite since the beginning of WW II! All others since and including FDR had issues, some very serious issues.

You want honest government?

Do away with a RETIREMENT package for all politicians, and many of the PERKS they currently have. CUT salaries to be paid only for days actually worked a min. of 6 hours per day. All politicians have to have a MAIN job, and be a politician because they LOVE this country and want to see it better! It should be a secondary form of income. NO supporters money EVER, Federal funds only and a LIMITED amount at that! NO LAWYERS EVER are to be accepted into ANY public office!!!!!!!! If a lawyer gets LUCKY, he may become a member of SCOTUS!

I'm sure that's a start, add to it if you have an idea!!

the complicated accounting requirements on contributions make it so that only well-organized and well-funded PACs can successfully raise funds. In fact, I remember that in this year's primary, the Clinton campaign quite successfully brought lawsuits left and right against groups that tried to fund her opponents for not following the regulations to the T.

it would really help out the grassroots if it were a lot easier to raise and contribute money without running afoul of the many regulations on the subject.

another big problem is that incumbents tend to attract large sums of money from the business interests that benefit from their policies. The solution to this is to return the government to its proper role, where it is barred from regulating the economy and making certain businesses profitable while ruining others. that is why there is so much money in politics. returning the government to its proper role is a lot easier said than done, though; and it will only happen if we find a way to unseat a lot of incumbents; so it's a kind of circular problem.

ROTFL

The Conservatives are immune from your rantings????

They are all POLITICANS and they are all CORRUPT!

Take away their sweet retirement benefits and institute term limits!!! This sounds like the way to go, except for the fact that THEY have to pass the legislation.... Do you really think that they will bite the hand that feeds them???

The fact remains. Damn few of them are Conservatives, because Conservatives, unlike liberals, have principles and standards. A few may appear to betray their principles but it's hard to know who is a conservative except by their actions. Just telling the sheeple your conservative isn't enough. Ask Bush.

Last I heard, members of the State of New Hampshire's state government receive $100 per year (plus some basic expenses for mileage I think). If Congress was like that, plus not being allowed to accept donations (which are essentially bribes as we all know), then you'll get people whose true motive is only to be there because they want to help and NOT because of the money.

New Hampshire has a nice cross-section of society for people who serve, such as dentists & teachers. They have to remain members of the "working class", and don't lose touch with reality.

There wouldn't be any politicians who are so rich that they don't know how many houses they own!

Bob, It is a Nice thought if it could happen at the federal level but it won't.

As for NH slowly that is changing here because of the NY,NJ, MA imports.
We soon will be like you since our NH imports want goverment to WIPE THIER AZZ & snotty noses. LOL!

I cringe when I have to cross the border. tight roads, high gas, crazy drivers the only thing that is a bargain is the Mass meals tax at 5% must be so TEDDY can eat alot.

another nice thing about new hampshire is that they are one of the smallest states in total acreage, but they have more state house districts than almost any other state. pretty much every little town is its own district, and elects its own rep to the state house. this definitely has the effect of keeping the government close to the people, instead of like in my state where it seems the only kind of reps to get elected are the polished turd, full of sh!t politician types. In NH, a lot of the voters usually personally know the reps they are voting on, instead of going on what they read in the papers or whatever.

one of the many reasons i considered moving to NH. who knows, i still might.

Henschman,

How do you propose getting term limits passed through Congress?
