Wow. This is stunning. Obama's actually told Michelle to stay home, most likely because a trip to Europe affords her far too many opportunities to talk.

That wouldn't be good: talking to Europeans about how proud she is to be an American, and doing this talking about her pride entirely in English, seulement, since Michelle, like her husband, speaks no foreign language (how embarrassing, right Obama?).

This news is a real shocker. It also gives us insight into Obama's internal polling numbers. Michelle Obama had been looking forward to this trip - it's all she's been talking about lately - taking her commentary and critiques of America on a global road show, to educate all who come before her (bless her heart). Things must be really bad in terms of her favorability ratings for someone to tell her to shut up and stay home - and to do this for no good reason, since the Obama daughters are on summer vacation (so they can't use them as an excuse for Michelle to sit this trip out), and in fact there's really nothing stopping the campaign from taking the whole family on a once-in-a-lifetime trip abroad, susidized partially by American taxpayers (the massive Secret Service and State Department resources going into this) and the broadcast networks (which reimburse the campaign for taking journalists along on the Obama Magical Mystery tour).

Also, the Obama campaign today once more started attacking Cindy McCain, and her family's successful business holdings. This, after Obama promised on June 18th he would never, ever, never allow anyone to say anything bad about Mrs. McCain.

Something's fishy with this Michelle business. For her to miss her chance to fist-bump in front of the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben, either the New Yorker cover is expected to generate too much bad press for the campaign overseas, or something else Michelle-related is on the way (and having her on the trip would provide far too many chances for this whole thing to blow up in Obama's face).

But, come on. If Europe survived the Griswold invasian back in the 80s, it can definitely host Michelle Obama for a week or two.
