It's also amazing(these days) to recognize Helms never finished college, and still went on to great national stature. Just proves a college education isn't really necessary to be intelligent. I didn't agree with him on everything, but there's oh so much.

Not that you have any concept what it was like yo be an adult in the 30's through the 50's, Helms saw things as most Americans did then, including black Americans.

I can't think of plenty of better people to die, but this was his time and being a believer in God, no doubt he was ready.

I can't argue with his view of gays, though personally, I'm not as outspoken as he. Still, it's wrong according to my beliefs and that's that.

I also oppose MLK day. We don't have a Geore Washington Day. We don't have an Abraham Lincoln Day. Each of them did more for American than King ever did. We don't have a "white Americans" day, let alone MONTH! We don't need an MLK day. We need people to stop using their crutches when we already know they can stand and walk, and even run, without them.

Helms, the "Fing dirtbag," also adopted a 9yr old child and saw to it that boy was well taken care of, though he had a crippling disease. Yeah, he was a dirtbag...Must have been... How many children have you chosen to take care of, which weren't your own blood? Dare I say, zero?

What can you expect though? "Decency" isn't a well established trait of any liberal I've ever known. They tend to TRY being mean, rude, and generally unacceptable. They apparently think that's what makes them "different" and while it does, that doesn't mean it's a good thing.

The best part is how they try to disguise their indecency as intelligence and wit. It's as if you better agree with their lack of integrity or you are just living in the past. Trapped in the forties I believe it was described here on the board. Well, I would rather be trapped in the forties and live my life in a respectful, honorable manner and be called not so smart by a bunch of lowlife libs than surrender all decency at the alter of "progression".

I had the pleasure of getting very close to Mr. Helms on a school trip. He was very gracious to the entire class, white and black kids...

He had some old school opinions but he did alot for this country and my state. He didn't flip flop and you knew where he stood on things. Like it or leave it... He was one of the most powerful Senators ever, he didn't get that way by being but so bad....

MLK isn't a black holiday. MLK day is an American holiday. You should be just as proud of him as any other national holiday. It was you who chose to seperate yourself from a great American hero like MLK. Washington and Lincoln were great Americans but MLK, I think, had just as big as an impact on our country, just in different ways. It's sad that you can't see a black person as an AMerican hero. I teach Sociology and honor black history month. Teachers will come up to me and say, "When is white history month". I say, "January, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December".

I said he had different opinions, they are the biggest of them. However he did do alot for NC and this country.... He is one of the reasons we are not a socialist society right now. He was a conerstone of the converstative views. And, Yes he was wrong with his racist statements......
