War monger Bush removes another nation from state terror sponsor list

President Bush today announced his plans to remove N. Korea from the state department's list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Just a little fact sheet here:

Lybia
Iraq
Afghanistan
N. Korea

All were launching grounds of terroism in the 90's

Today, they are all working towards fighting terrorism, some more than others, but this is all a great step forward.

The next president should continue this approach, hopefully Iran, and Syria, Cuba, and Venezuela will be the next nations to finally see the light.

Maybe, just maybe Bush's tough approach towards dealing with these nations is finally paying off.

No arguments there. But stupidity paid off in this case, and Americans are the beneficiaries. Period

Yup, he's stupid, but smart enough to get the Democratic Congress to pass the next Iraq Funding bill, without any earmarks thrown onto it!

Fact: Taliban ran the Afghanistan government in 2001. Democratic government is running the show now. = sucess for Bush.

Fact: Iraq was run by the only other leader to be compared with Hitler before Bush took care of business. = success for Bush

Both nations are not the next vacation spot, but they are better now for the region than they were before, and hopefully the military success of the surge will help propel the government to make the nessesary changes to imporove the country for their people for the better.
It is true that their weren't bombs going off on a regular basis during Saddams era, but if that ends in the next year or two it will make Iraq an ecconomic powerhouse in the region, and an ally to the US, which we need right now.

Do you think the people of Japan thought that Truman made the right decision is dropping two atom bombs on their country to end a war that would have cost millions of more lives? Obviously not, but as history has shown that decision was the right one.

I think it was wrong to start the Iraq war, but its intentions are for the better, and if things do continue to improve there, then the Iraqis of the next generation will be thanking the US for our sacrafice.

ok who has control of the afghan military? Who is in control of the afghan parliment? Who is working with NATO to eliminate the remnants of the taliban?

Bush's goal was to rid afghanistan of Taliban rule. not to worry about their economy. The taliban just made a large scale assault right outside of Kabul, and was wiped out in a matter of days. Yeah they are really reemerging aren't they.

Fool.

Duh.

That was the whole "NEOCON" plan from the very begining... to "bring the fight to the terrrorists" and to "fight them over there, so we don't have to fight them over here".

It's amazing when somebody says they are going to do something, and everybody says "that sound good to me", then 2 years later in the middle of a political election they all say "HEY, YOU DIDN'T SAY YOU WERE GOING TO DO THAT!!"

Is 2008 new enough???

Drugs undermine Afghanistan's efforts to rebuild
May 7, 2008

FAIZABAD, Afghanistan: Jam Bigum, a drug addict in Afghanistan's impoverished northern province of Badakhshan, feeds her three-month-old son opium three times a day to keep him quiet.

"The baby got addicted in my womb. He will die of crying if I don't give him opium. When I give him opium he becomes quiet and sleeps," she said. The infant had an empty gaze and appeared drowsy throughout the interview.

Afghanistan is the world's largest opium producer and exporter but most people tend to forget that it is also a huge narcotics consumer. A 2005 survey estimated that there are some 920,000 drug users in a country of 26 million.

For a long time, people living in remote parts of Afghanistan have had a casual attitude towards opium, using it as a panacea for just about anything due to a lack of medicines. Like Bigum's baby, they are fed opium so their mothers can work..

The bulk of Afghanistan's poppy production comes from the south, an area where Taliban insurgents wield considerable influence and over which Kabul has only partial control. Security sources say the Taliban takes a 10 percent share of poppy yields.

Christine Oguz, head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Afghanistan, says the opium trade in the south is flourishing due to a mix of powerful landowners, organised criminal networks, corrupt officials and a lack of law and order.

Thank you...LOL

Afghanistan is, as of March, 2008, the greatest illicit (in Western World standards) opium producer in the world, before Burma (Myanmar), part of the so-called "Golden Triangle". Opium production in Afghanistan has been a significant problem (or a significant business) for Afghanistan, especially since the downfall of the Taliban in 2001. Based on UNODC data, there has been more opium poppy cultivation in each of the past four growing seasons (2004-2007), than in any one year during Taliban rule. Also, more land is now used for opium in Afghanistan, than for coca cultivation in Latin America. In 2007, 93% of the opiates on the world market originated in Afghanistan. This amounts to an export value of about $4 billion, with a quarter being earned by opium farmers and the rest going to district officials, insurgents, warlords and drug traffickers. In the seven years (1994-2000) prior to a Taliban opium ban, the Afghan farmers' share of gross income from opium was divided among 200,000 families.
