Stem cells apparently cure boy's fatal disease!

The treatment uses umbilical and marrow cells to help develop normal skin. Doctors say it may move his genetic disorder, recessive epidermolysis bullosa, 'off the incurable list' for other patients.

By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 7, 2008

Using stem cells from umbilical cord blood and bone marrow, researchers have apparently cured a fatal genetic disease in a 2-year-old Minneapolis boy, which could open the door for other stem cell treatments.

For the first time in his life, Nate Liao is wearing normal clothes, eating food that has not been pureed, and playing with his siblings.

"Nate's quality of life is forever changed," said Dr. John Wagner of the University of Minnesota Medical School, who performed the treatment. "Maybe we can take one more disorder off the incurable list."

The team later treated Nate's 5-year-old brother, Jacob, and is preparing to treat 9-month-old Sarah Rose Mooreland of Folsom, Calif. Hopes are high for them as well.

Nate suffers from recessive epidermolysis bullosa, which affects 1 in 100,000 children. They lack a critical protein called collagen type VII that anchors the skin and lining of the gastrointestinal system to the body.

Their skin is extraordinarily fragile. Tearing and blistering occur with minimal friction, leading to painful wounds and scarring. Solid food produces erosion of the esophagus. Death usually results from malnutrition, infections or aggressive skin cancer.

The only treatment previously has been to wrap the skin in bandages.

The idea of using circulating stem cells to treat the condition was developed by Dr. Angela M. Christiano of Columbia University Medical Center. This is the first time that cells from bone marrow and cord blood have been used to treat a condition that does not involve blood.

Seven months after treatment, Nate's body is making collagen type VII, Wagner said at a news conference Tuesday. His face has plumped up and he has fewer blisters. "I have watched Nate improve every day," said his mother, Theresa.

The results will be published in a future issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

lets NOT get into this debate over stem cell research! I have a hard time understanding why the President keeps vetoing any stem cell bill.

No, but since adult stem cells have been the only stem cells that have been proven to work, I would imagine that they would be what I'd use!

I am by no means pro abortion but I think that banning federal funding of embryonic stem cell research was needlessly caving in to the fringe right.

What's wrong with all stem cell research?

I understand that study, But we will never know the potential of embryonic stem cell research unless we are allowed to try it.

From what I have read the gov't has funded embryonic stem cell research on 28 strains that have been out there and have come up with no positive gains!

The gov't simply won't pay for any other embryonic stem cells to be used. There is nothing that says private research can not be using embryonic stem cells!

I would think that since there are so many people interested in doing it, that SOMEONE or some company would step up, and PAY for it! If successful, it would make that company a lot of money and isn't that what companies do, research to make $$$$$?

How much money has the gov. spent on Aids, or cancer research without any results? See its only ok if the question of morals isn't a factor.

No offense but I would expect that it is probably proportional to the number of people affected by each.

from a 2000article: The past three years have witnessed a marked increase in federal funding for HIV/AIDS research, education and treatment programs for infected Americans. Federal funding for AIDS research alone will exceed $2 billion dollars this fiscal year. In addition, Congress allocated $1.59 billion to securing expensive experimental treatments for low-income individuals under the Ryan White Care Act.

Nobody says a word about no progress here!

So we shouldn't help anyone unless a certain number of people get fatal skin disease? So people who have no hope or means of paying millions for private research are just 2nd class people and don't deserve any fed. help?

How many people are affected? Are you kidding me?

There's not all that many people affected by aids... AND we know exactly what causes it... AND it is almost entirely behavioral... yet we throw a crapload of money at it. Why?

Politics.

Why aren't we spending govt $ on embryonic stem cells?

Politics.

Cancer is cancer and lets spend what it takes to cure it but how do we know that maybe embryonic stem cells might not be an answer?

At least for now we won't because of... politics.

How many people have aids? Seems we have come up with medicine that has prolonged their lives by many years! Cancer is the what #1 or #2 killer of the most people, depending on what study and what propaganda those reports need to show!

What disease is stem cell research going to cure? You brought up a skin disease from the article. Certainly doesn't have the urgency of aids or cancer, does it?

Gonna have to agree with blob and plowboy on this one. Stem cell research could cure hundreds of diseases and spinal cord injuries. It may even cure cancer and aids, but we'll never know unless we try. The far right and the far left think they're smarter than the average joe and have to inflict their views on the rest of society.
